GPRS Mobil phone cost 12/2007
How much can I expect to pay[ 12/2007] for an entry level GPRS phone, using a prepaid connection to my laptop?

how much is your budget? Best bet is to look at the online store for someone like airtel, etc. That will give you some idea of which ones are data capable - and approximately how much they cost. |

There would be two capabilities, one would be simple GPRS compatibility and other one would be EDGE compatibility.
You should check if EDGE is available in the area you plan to use it, then you should got a EDGE compatible phone OR else a simple GPRS phone will do. Cost of connection will again depend on the location you want to use in. |

Thanks BB66, and Shashank.
I hs just got my mind round GPRS and in pops EDGE, you may have gathered that Im not much of a tecchie. Trouble is that the info in the mobile providers shops is not very good, being a somewhat small town, and some of their command of english is limited, they call it Tinglish, and I dont want to buy something not suitable. Shall check Airtel site There is one fellow who could help, but he is the person whose email shop I use, and I dont think he would like to loose our custom, so I hoped to go out pre armed with some info. Thanks anaway |

For a layman, EDGE is advanced version of GPRS. you can use this site which was recommended to me by someone on this board itself..
www.gsmarena.com Once you figure out the model you want, you can check the prices and availability in India usng www.ebay.in, however don;t purchase from there as the rates of sellers on ebay.in are generally higher that what is normally available.. |

Is a budget of around 5000 rupees about right for a basic model.

5000 rupees should be more than enough (considering you can get a basic prepay for 1-2000 rupees)? The only thing will be making sure its data capable if that's what you need.

I paid 5000 rupees for Bleu which is EDGE provisioned. This gives you an idea as to cost. My connection is prepaid Airtel at 395 rupees per month for unlimited use.

The camera in mine is just o.k. Not great in other words and I very rarely use it. Better to have a decent digital small camera separately I think and that is what i am on the lookout for now!

Off Topic! Thanks for those suggestions of your cameras! When I go to Delhi I now have something for a benchmark. I hope they are not too expensive???
