Glossary?
Hi:
Is there a glossary somewhere on this site where I can find out what a frequently used term or acronym means? For example, I seem to be the only person here who doesn't know what a SIM card is. Thanks! |

no there isn't, but it's probably a good idea.
a SIM card is a removeable "chip" so to speak that is used in some phones to store cell phone numbers. not all cell phones contain SIM cards. |

I guess the OP wants to know what S . I . M stands for and not the meaning of the word SIM card.
Cheers, Aadil.

SIM stands for "subscriber identity module", by the way.
And it stores a lot more than just phone numbers - it's basically a little hard drive for your phone that stores ALL the relevant info, and which can easily be removed and put into a new phone. |

SIM - Subscriber Identity Module
It is used to recognize a subscriber of a network. widely it is used in GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) networks across the globe. The handset or mobile phone is just an equipment and most of the mobile phones identify network using a SIM card. |

Shashank you are right
A competing technology is CDMA, Gsm uses different frequencies for subscribers, CDMA uses a commomn frequency with a coding for each subscriber. The merits and de-merites are debatable. By virtue of the technology data transmision may be better with CDMA |

Unfortunately, the acronyms are Indian and not indiamike-an, so dunno if a glossary would work.
Still, SIM is better than Quote:

SIM is used everywhere SIM cards are predominant, not just India I think. I know I've been hearing the term for years here in the states, way before I ever thought I'd be traveling to India. And I've not even bothered to read up on the cell phone threads here at IM, because I'm not bringing mine and not in need of one.

hmmmm....sometimes it seems like acronyms for the sake of it. GSLV ( presumably Geo Synchronous Lift Vehicle) = "rocket". Why not just say the rocket blew up....?

I've been scouring around for a bit; Wikipedia used to have a very good list of Web acronyms/abbreviations, but I can't find it back. Some googling should help, also for telephone stuff, whcih I likewise can't find there.
This is fun: http://www.lingo2word.com/
