Getting high speed internet connection with laptop
Getting high speed internet connection with laptop
hey - i doubt this is really feasible, but how hard would it to get a high speed connection with my laptop? I want to travel india for 3-6 months, but I do computer consulting for a living and I would lose clients if I can't at least relatively keep in touch and do some work. I mostly want to hang out in the north - Himalayas, Leh, Dharamsala, Rishikesh, Varanasi. I am not expecting to get a connection trekking in the Himlayas but maybe at some of the towns?
thanks
thanks

High Speed and Internet are two words that don't fit together.
In the areas that you list internet is easily available, though if yuu check through the other threads you may find hooking up a laptop more work than it's actually worth.
But heck, I run this whole site from internet cafes while traveling.

Another word that don`t fit together with internet and high speed is Leh , if you should judge from my last visit. Sometimes I would be shut out of my mail server or bank because of the slow connections. To quote a more travelled man : "only Laos is slower". I heard rumors of plans to upgrade the lines. Rumors. Learn to recite and believe mantras like "adversities is an oppurtunity to culture patience" , always carry a floppy , and check the offline rates in advance.
hi,
I'm in Dharam Shala. I've managed to get a fairly high speed internet connection in my guest house room
. I'm at 'Tenwang Guest House' on Jogibara road past the post office. There is a company here that has a satelite and is supplying connections across LAN cable to their network for 1,000 Rs a month.
Great deal for me since I work on the internet, see http://jamiep.org
I'd love to travel to Leh for the monsoon (or non monsoon) period and work from there but Ladakh's internet connectivity rule out this idea. Anyone got any info on an internet connection that would be workable there. Anything that I can use from my laptop and at least offers around 15kbps real download speeds would be great.
Since we alread have a cable to Tenwang Guest House it may even be possible to use the connection just for a few days for people passing through.

Thanks for the heads up on that Jamie
I was in McLeod Ganj in last December with a notebook computer and ever wishing for a faster connection than what I was getting in the internet cafes. Will be there again in December and hoping a year will have improved on the high speed access.

Yes. Things are moving quite quickly here in India now. I think broadband or what they are calling broadband will be available in most fairly civilised places soon. They are expecting to have the ADSL service from BSNL here (McLeod Ganj) any day now. A lot of the internet cafes have put in there applications for the service already. Hey, So it is possible to get internet in the guesthouse room? please give me more information about this because I am coming soon and also work from my laptop. Thanks!
