General question re. prices for electronic goods
Hi All,
I'll be travelling to India for the first time in a months or so, and may be
travelling via Hong Kong.
I'm wondering how the prices of consumer electronics in India (Mumbai and Delhi) compare with places like Hong Kong and Singapore.
In particular, i'm thinking of MP3 players, portable hard drives, voice recorders and digital cameras (not that i'm going to be buying all these things, but just to give myself a bit of an idea!)
Thanks, M.

The prices in general for electronic items are generally on the higher side as many of these are imported, and customs duty and other taxes increase the prices. I know for a fact that stuff like mp3 players, digital cameras, flash memory ( SD Card, jump drives etc), printers, scanners etc are more expensive than USA.
Thanks Somari, I figured that may be the case, particularly for genuine gear (I read on here somewhere that badged or "pirate" equipment is available but I wouldn't really want to risk it). Looks like Hong Kong will be the go, and post it back home from there or on arrival in India so I don't have to carry it around...

Hong Kong is duty free, so you'll find that the prices are far lower - half the price you would pay in India for many things.
For the goodies you are looking for, make your way to Mong Kok MTR station (on Kowloon) and walk through Ladies' Market. Mong Kok Computer Centre is about 200 metres from the MTR on your right. It is actually signposted inside the MTR, and if you can't find it, just ask - everyone knows it!
There are other computer centres in Wanchai and Tsim Sha Tsui, but they're nowhere near as good.
The price on the ticket isn't the price that you pay. Do a deal; ask for a gift. You will always get a discount... take your time and you'll get a bargain.
There on the first floor (what they call the second floor in some countries) there is a store that sells every title of software that is worth having - for a few HK$ a disk.
MK is also a great place for sports goods, trainers, etc. All the top brands at great prices. You will find literally hundreds of electronics shops selling music players, cameras, mobile phones, video cameras, satellite navigation, computer peripherals, CCTV, etc.
Good, branded equipment is expensive in India, so why not buy a couple of MP3 players or pen drives as gifts for your Indian friends?

Seriously... if you try to come with a suitcasefull of electronics you may well have trouble with customs
Ha! Well, maybe when I win the lottery I'll see what can be arranged!
Cheers John - some friends were actually trying to recall the name of this big cheap computer centre that I should visit, I asked them if it was Mong Kok (after reading your post) and they said it was!
