Consider WiFi in the same way that one would having Safe Sex, do not do it unless one takes precautions, more than viruses maybe exchanged during the the 'intercourse'.

I'm sorry but this is the sort of nonsense peddled by IT hacks and anti-virus software firms who both want to stay in a job. You're not going to all of a sudden have multiple virii envelop your computer the moment you log on to a wireless connection. That is unless you're exceptionally naive and have both your own wireless network connection and folders shared without a password. Yes, a sophisticated operator could in theory intercept your packets if you're using an unsecured access point. Not only are the chances of this happening absolutely minimal, the problem is simply sidestepped by not doing anything sensitive whilst connected to an unencrypted network.
Goan Canuck: not great but not bad for a free connection. Browsing was reasonably nippy and a 48kbps audio stream was fine. It struggled with a small video stream however. FTP worked also. The Cajun Chicken sandwich was poor, but I rate the Lemon Ice Tea in Coffee Day ![]() |

I'll be headed to India with my laptop and wifi card. I thought that you needed a password to access a hotspot? I just started using wifi at a friends house who set up a wireless connection and I needed the password that was set-up on it. Will my card automatically connect? Thanks in advance.

It all depends on the settings of the WiFi Host, if they have a security setting that requires a log in password then one will need one, if not then it should be accessible as open to all users. Use a FireWall for yourself though.

Thanks Mira. I've recently had to deal with spyware that latched onto my registry so Zonealarm is on whenever I go online.

Old post I am bringing up here, and slightly off topic but can anyone recommend a good firewall that is available online for free? I don't know much about this but will be bringing my laptop to India and it seems like something worth looking into.
Thanks |
