Smile emailing pics back to USA

Hi
I have never used any internet service or internet cafe etc when I was out of the country and I would like to email my digital pics from my SD memory card back to the USA...never know what can happen...can lose my camera...my card...etc.
I was thinking of getting a card reader and putting my pics on the HDD at the internet cafe and emailing them home ...then delete them from their hard drive and/or put them on a CD while I'm there. I don't know if I would be allowed to do this.Would a crad reader be a good solution?
Another choice might be to go to a camera shop and ask them to email them for me or put them on a CD.
I have a 512MB flashdrive but I'll be away a long time and that wouldn't hold much...even getting a 2GB wouldn't do it either. The other choice is an inexpensive portable drive that I can download my pics to or just get a few extra SD cards.
Any suggestions...just want to make sure I don't lose my pics.
Thanks,
Richard

emailing would mean downsizing the pics to unprintable resolution. In many places it can be be a painful process just to look at a web page with a lot of icons etc. - that´s why there is a low graphics version of indiamike. Upstream speeds are a lot slower. On the other hand there are a lot of places where you can have your pics transferred to a CD. Burn two , send one , wipe the card after you´ve seen your pics on another ´puter. And yes , get a second card & battery.

simple enough...that's what I'll do... I assume any camera store can burn my pics as I travel and to a populat format like .jpg...better do it to a DVD just to make sure there is enough room..thank you for the info
Best,
Richard

I do it all the time..simple transfer the pics on a computer at cybercafe and burn them into a CD OR DVD...

If you have an Mp3 player or other such device, you can copy those images on that...or else you can easily get a laptops hardisk with a USB compatible casing for around Rs.3000 or less ..depening on the capacity..

but I like the idea of using Mp3 player if I do not have the option of burning a disc OR if I am doing an Interim transfer..

Well...card reader should also be carried..because when you attach your camera to the PC, you might need to install supporting software for the same...even though this can be done most of the times...

First of all the data is copied to hard disk of the computer and after that burned to optical media..

you need not carry blank discs with you...any cafe that would have a CD/DVD writer would have blank media and its quite Cheap...like a CD for Rs.10 and DVD for Rs.20..

and most of the cyber cafe operators in tourist areas are familiar with these things...they would do this for you without any additional charge..

RXrich:

as far as protection of data is concerned, Compact Flash Drives are way better than CD/DVD/MP3 players or portable hard drives...they are made to be abused and you can drop them anot not worry about them...if you have a good supply of them then bring them instead...these days you get flash drives that can hold 10 times that of CD or twice that of DVD...

just look at them as long term investements...512mb is definitely inadequate...where will you store the photos to fit one DVD, while you run out of space in your flash drive???...
