DVD Type ?

Just wondering :
What system is used in India? Is it "PAL" like in europe? Or
is it like the U.S. system? Thanx!!

It isn't the US video format I can tell that from my tapes..

It's PAL, yes, although TVs and DVD players seem pretty flexible these days.

Actually it is not the DVD type that is most important, rather the TV format. In the US it is NTSC while in India it is PAL (better resolution). Set top boxes in India can convert the PAL signal to NTSC so that a TV purchased in the US and taken to India can be used.

In the case of the DVD, the pre-recorded ones have security features based on regions of the world. DVD's sold in the US can only be played on DVD players that allow region one DVD's and so on. There are DVD's produced that allow all regions and they are specifically identified as such.

I think most TV's and DVD players nowadays can accept both systems in Asia. I use an Oppo brand DVD player that will play any format DVD that I feed it. The problem with many DVD's in Asia is that most of them are not sourced from original master disks. They are copied from substandard copies and they don't look like an original any longer. Poor resolution, motion artifacts, and, heavy pixelation.

Also, many electronic products in the U.S. will need a transformer here in Asia. Best to buy products with universal power supplies.

The picture quality of the original DVD's in India is absolutely ok. There is a parallel market for pirated DVD's, the picture quality of these can be very bad. Pepole use hand held video camera to record films off the screen in theatres even.

DVDs in India are PAL but that does not matter as both players and TVs in India are multisystem and can handle both type of formats. When buying a DVD player ask the dealer to make it region-free.

The problem with buying DVD's in Asia is that you don't know which are mastered correctly and which are not. Unless you know your dealer very well, it will be hit and miss. Even the dealers have told me don't worry, 100%, guaranteed. Bullsh**t. Most don't even know what they have and if you are a tourist, you will not be bringing them back.
