Downloading Photos
Hi All
I have at the last minute decided to take a digital camera with me, I may be taking a 20gb ipod, if so, I am sorted, if not, what is the best option for downloading photos. I am NOT a techy person, I don't want to take more stuff with me I just want something relatively easy, either burn them to CD or what is a good website to upload. I have a gmail acct, maybe that is the best way to go, not sure. I have read through the threads but everyone is going off into tech land and also spending more money, I don't have any more money to spend on any more electronic stuff. Any advice would be appreciated. |

So I told by people here, it is very easy to get your photos burnt to a cd in internet cafes.
An ipod is a great idea (its what i'll be doing) (but then again, im a techie!) You could also buy a USB flash card reader (about AU$15-20 on ebay, and im sure you could get them somewhere in india), then email yourself the photos to your gmail account.

Re: Uploading - depending on your photo resolution and the speed of the internet connection that might be a frustrating experience.
While CD burning is the best option play the recorded cd on any other available cd drives to ensure that the files have been burned correctly. Depending on how much of a shutterbug you are, a small investment in a larger capacity memory card might pay rich dividends in terms of less hassles about uploading, burning etc. Happy clicking ![]() |

It is really easy to burn your photos to CD, as sticky said. I did it a bunch of times on my last trip and even in smaller towns, if there are enough tourists passing through, there seems to be a photo burning place.
I'm not sure where you're headed but towns like Rishikesh, Dharamsala and Pushkar all had them, as well as the major cities. |

imhere
i bought a 512mb memory card - this will store at least 700 photos, even at high res. i took the camera software, usb cable and cds and found that some cyber cafes were willing to let us install our software (takes minutes only) and download our photos to cd. apart from the memory card, which you can use when you get home, i didn't spend any more money. i am not a techie but i think that if the computer has windows xp you don't even need the camera software - techies, feel free to correct me. anyway, i found that carrying 3-4 cds and a cable in my daypack was not a drama and i'm glad i thought to throw in the software. |

Yep, its too easy to download photos, unless someone inforces a security policy that doesnt allow it (and most people dont).
Speaking of iPods though, mine was just delivered to my office 10 mins ago. they really are sexy things even the box it came in is sexy ![]() anyway..... back to the topic.... CD's are dirt cheap, you can make multiple backups, and it doesnt take too long either. If one net cafe has restrictive policies, go down the road to another one ![]() If the computer has windows XP and a USB connection you should be able to connect the two and get windows to see your camera as a "USB mass storage device", it should do this on its own, so as far as your concerned it just looks like another drive. then just drag and drop. you do have to disconnect many of tehse connections properly though. look at your camera manual and it will show you. What happened to the avatar gueric? are you going for a more pure look to try and hide your "vitamin" addiction? |

Hi!
Thanks for all the info I'll be picking up a little 5 megapixel with some spare mem cards for my trip. Problem is storing the cd's after you're done burning. Might take a little cd wallet with me aswell. |

Wow it seems everyone is reading my mind today and asking all the questions that I was going to
One more question though - how can you be sure that the CD is burned properly. I mean, I know, by checking that it opens in another CD drive, but is that 100% guarantee that it will work back home? F. ![]()

if you can put the cd in and look at the photos on it, then they are fine. burn 2 copies if they are really important, and then make sure they dont get scrathed etc

Nowadays most small towns in India have CD burning facilities at the local internet shop or digital photo studio where they normally charge Rs50 per CD or card / memory stick copied and you can always check the photos on their computer to verify that it has been copied properly and in the right resolution too. Also keep a good CD wallet or case to carry all of them around without breaking them or damaging them with scratches or dirt. Hope this helps.
Cheers, Aadil.
