I never needed a cell phone at all given convenient STD access and internet access. Course if you must stay in touch (not much of a vacation) then you must have an unlocked GSM phone. The people there can adjust frequencies and sell cards..

A dual band GSM phone will be enough.

The right band

India uses GSM 900, so make sure your phone uses that. Some Tri-band phones are 850 instead of 900.

There are 2 or 3 different GSM bands used in different parts of India, from what I have read. Sorry, I am not fluent in cell phone terminology, or I would tell you what the other two numbers are, but anyway they are the only two which haven't been mentioned. If you search these excellent forums, you will find info about the different networks in India and which bands they use.
So, if you are going to be travelling widely, I think tri-band would be advisable. Of course in some places there is also CDMA, so depending on your situation it might just be easiest to get an appropriate phone when you get there.
