Digital cameras - what software is needed? etc

Hi all, just 8 days until I depart for 8 1/2 months!!! But onto the meat of it: I'm planning on using my old Kodak dc240 to set up a photo album (probably Yahoo photos), and have a few questions:

What sort of software do I need to bring? Would it be okay to install my camera program on every computer I go to, or is it possible to upload pics without the camera program? And wouldn't I need to make the pictures smaller? Do most computers in internet cafes in India have paint programs and such?

Thanks!

p.s. Another question. As the above camera is quite old and not so good (I think 1.6 mp), can anyone recommend a good DC for under $300 that is super small and light? And what is considered "good" for mega-pixels now?

I'm using a Sony Cybershot (3.2mp) and like it just fine. The photo of me and Bijapuri & company I uploaded was taken yesterday with it (thread called "India Travellers Meet in California").

I plan to take the USB cables and software with me, and will get the photos burned to CD. I do not expect to upload anything while travelling -- after all, I'll be on vacation and need a rest from the computer.

I'm using a Sony Cybershot (5 mp) and like it just fine... actually more than fine. It has a reformating feature so that you can get a copy with smaller size before downloading it to the computer.

I spent some time uploading photos from scanners (mostly in McLeod & Darjeeling) last year and had no major problems finding places with Photoshop.

need for software in order to download from the camera in Windows environment - no idea - just works on OS X.

If your camera needs software for download maybe it`s easiest to bypass this by bringing card reader ?

Thingy that can read memory card (compact flash, memory stick, whatever) and transfer it thru USB connection. Typical weight around 20 grams, price around 40 USD
