The Intel - AMD war has been going on for centuries and you can't say that one is better than the other.

For office applications, Intel has allways been the better party, but for graphical rendering and multimedia applications, AMD allways scored better and that still is so.

So what kind of processor you want, truly depends on your demands and with the current technology, there is no real difference noticable for common users...

This is true, although lately i've been finding the Intel Core Duo is actually just as good as the AMD athlon with the newer games, as long as you have a good graphics card with your Intel, and AMD is no where as good as an Intel when it comes to office work.

Greer, the dell laptop is actually kind of outdated with the 128 MB Geforce 8400M, but its actually a decent laptop for the price your getting it for, have you tried looking for refurbished laptops on dell.com? They have some really nice laptops for a good price with really good warranty as well.

agree with the zman (how's that for a nickname)! There's very little difference really.

I've always built machines with pentium chips, up until the last one when the difference in pricing between intel and AMD was too ridiculous to ignore - so currently running AMDs - and its fine. Getting the graphics card/ motherboard mix is important. Built one machine with a gigabyte MB and asus graphics card. It barked at the moon and chased cars (when it wasn't locking up - which was most of the time). Now - its asus MBs and gigabyte nvdia graphics cards. No problems in 2 years.

In terms of laptops - toshiba are probably my number 1 (got a couple of those) - and are pretty much problem free. They always seem to have nice innovative features as well - but they are never the cheapest. Compaqs seem to be offering good value for money at the moment. My last portable was an HP tc100 tablet - and it was great. Good size, good performance, more connectivity options than you could shake a stick at (bluetooth, wifi, ethernet, dial up, infra red)- and once you got use to the stylus it was a breeze (had a swivel keyboard as well - but once your familiar with the pen you dont use it as often).

Yup, thats right, i have the IBM Thinkpad R51 (which they dont make anymore, and now Lenovo makes the R61) and I like it better than my Dell XPS, unless if i'm playing games ofcourse

Dell, their support queues might be long but hey its toll free! Also Dell offers quite a few warranty upgrades which make their laptops quite attractive.

I am currently using the same machine, It's fairly new to me, only six months old and as yet I have had no problems or complaints, in fact I am very happy with it. Previously I had a Dell Inspiron which also was a great little machine. I think I'd always choose Dell over Acer. If you do get any problems with a Dell machine in India then it's not too difficult to arrange to get an engineer to come to your place to check it out.

The main problem I have found with laptops in India is not with the machine itself but with the electric supply. Quite often I find the earthing to be inadequate which soon damages the quality of your battery.

machine: dell xps
problem after 6 months: left/right clicks on keypad kaput
customer care: took me a fortnight of calling 4 times a day - to get someone who actually picked up my call [again malaysian bpo].
14 days is really good time - i am serious - the last time, it took me near about 3 months for someone to answer my call!!!

so how the hell does it matter if the customer service number is toll free or not

brishti - what a run around - you must be quite fed up. Will add my 2 cents worth here, to say my daughter has an Acer (now 18 months old) and not one problem.

Yes, hers is fairly basic, not Vista or Duo - I think similar to mine (Celeron) but mine's HP. There's a nice very lightweight Mac being advertised lately...

Thanks for clarification, brishti - I wouldn't mind a weightless laptop but as you say, it's 'air'..as you will have gathered my computer knowledge is very limited, but learning daily! The one I have is satisfactory for me, but a bit heavy when you're trotting about with other luggage going to other places...
