Dell Latitude - What modem card for India?

I am just about to travel to India with a laptop. I need to buy a PC Card for the laptop and need to know what connectors and what card specification I need to enable me to plug into the local telephone service.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I am in the UK

India uses RJ-11 the telephone jack.(same as the US type)

I think UK uses RJ-45. This is not compatible to the Indian one. But you can always go for an external converter. Ask for a RJ-11 to RJ-45(if your PC card is this) converter.

I wonder if there is any variation in other card specifications with respect to different countries.

You’ll have to go for a power adaptor also as these are also different from the UK type. You can buy this locally in India from an ‘electrical shop’ for about a 20-30rs.

India has 230V,50 Hz power supply, same as that of the UK.

avoid carrying your laptop unless really really necessary. I needed mine for work reasons but access is very slow and unreliable in many parts of India. It is a lot easier to use the internet cafes. I had numerous speed related problems in Mumbai and especially Goa. Luckily I am based at the Taj Mumbai and they offer 2M wireless access which is good but again unreliable at times.

Thanks

Many thanks for your reply about internet access.

the laptop is for a pair of Doctors who will use it for composing e-mails and then they will use a Floppy to take down to the internet cafe -

Cheers
