http://www.d3tr.com/ its freeware (although there is a pro version which does a bit more). If you download it - read the help file as it is pretty straight forward. Aside from the standard traceroute - it also incorporates a "whois" function which gives you the hostname (if available) of each device that responds along the path of the trace (gives a bit more information compared to the standard windows app). Most of the names are either node/switch/ router, or server designations (e3w-jcn-m40-sprintlink.com blah blah blah...or something like that). Doesn't mean much but often it will tell you which carrier is being used by your provider, and by association - which route is being used. The more fancy smancy traceroute programmes have a globe that provide you with a graphical representation of your trace going around the world! To give you an example - on the traceroute to IM, the last three IP addresses before you get to IM appear to belong to a company called softlayer technologies located in Dallas (the hostname of the devices come up as pnap.com - which if you enter www.pnap.com into a browser belongs to a company called Internap - presumably the web hosting/ Internet service company name for softlayer). |

Thanks for the recommendation: I downloaded it (slowly, due to current internet conditions, but it is not big) and will give it a try.
The PRO version has mapping. It is not free, but not very expensive, either. I may even give up using Sam Spade!

This story re cable damage is on Times of India this morning - saying Airtel is re-routing via Pacific and no longer Atlantic at the moment. What is MTNL/BSNL doing? speed picked up last night enough for me to re-sync Outlook to Hotmail - tedious job with dial-up.Broadband man failed again to appear. Maybe problems here internally and he's just not doing it at present.

Yippee! And here is my first using of Broadband! It is finally done - password now here and all connected up plus LAN for GPRS disabled and this is what was blocking it before. BUT - because this is on an extension line he is warning me if the phone upstairs on the direct line is answered it may put Broadband out - so we have to change the line up and make the direct line come to here. In the meantime while no phone ringing no problem! Also he says it may not be a problem, we just wait and see....

Welcome to the information superhighway
(ok...maybe a side road with pot holes - but you get my drift)! So you were able to show him where the Airtel GPRS LAN setting was redirecting all traffic to an airtel proxy server! Bet you taught him a thing or two! Don't forget to keep a record of your password and ID - handy information to have around (especially if you have to call a help desk or something like that). Now all we have to do is get you a drivers license..... ![]() |

BTW: I was told by our MTNL(BSNL) guys here .... you can have only one phone on the Broadband telephone line. No extra phone extensions. That will certainly screwup the BB working. This I am sure, becos I did try having a parallel instrument once and it did stop BB working. |

It's great! So much faster than other connections!!!But yes, what a worry re the other phone... We will have to do something about that. Thanks for post, KS!
Missed your post in the fast downloading of this page, Brownboy! Yes, Driver's Licence next! And 'the Man' got this all connected up in 10 mins. once that LAN was disabled! He did look a bit sheepish! Ah well, thanks to the expert, he now has a bit extra knowledge for when he does connections for people using GPRS ones! I can't get over the speed of this - it's all very novel for me at the moment!! |

Now the problem with that is, the phone's base station requires "mains power" to work, as only the handset has battery! I solved this new (power-cut) problem by having the phone base-station on a the special power-line from the UPS/Invertor that we have now installed, to run a fan or two, and my computer during the daily 2 x 1.5hour power cuts here. ![]() |

The key is in the filter. The phones must all be attached on the phone connection of the filter, or each phone must have a filter. Our BSNL engineer actually gave us a splitter so we can attach another extension! My friend I was staying with in London has about four different devices on her line; sometimes it all stops working because an adaptor has come loose, but one kick and its up again !Quote:
That's bad! We get hardly any at this time of year, and when we do it usually just for a few minutes or half an hour. |

Certainly not a prob with MTNL here, I've had a phone ext (no splitter) on a parallel line throughout with only the odd disconnection if picked up at the other end. Certainly doesn't do anything for the quality of the voice line though, splitter or no splitter. Below par as long as the DSL is 'On'. |

Have you got a filter on that phone?
It's the DSL frequencies that mess up the phone call. Mind you, speech quality is lousy on our phone anyway. |

One filter will do for the whole setup, as long as it separates broadband from all phones.
ie the phone extension must be downstream, not upstream of the filter. By upstream I mean nearer the phone exchange. Or North. When the paper is pointing upward... Oh heck.... |

![]() Even if I wanted to, I have no idea how to figure out which is 'nearer' (no, bb, pleeez don't!). But funnily enough, the tel. exchange IS north of my place! |
