Just curious ..what is unlimited plan? in MTNL terminology and how much does that cost per mth? Maybe, I should have a relook at the plan (399) that I use.... KS

Sir, the Unlimited Plan (256 kbps) has no restriction on monthly download (GB). It is good for heavy users who d/l 2 GB or more per month.
It used to be Rs. 949/month, since 1st Jan it's been cut to Rs. 799/month. U need to consider it only if u exceed the limit in your plan to the extent that u are spending more than 800 bucks monthly.

OK thanks for details ... I will checkout my last 12 months MTNL bills .... and then decide which way option is better for me. My Download (GB) usage tends to be pretty uneven .... practically zero in months when I am out travelling ... and then suddenly spurting when I return and upload all them pictures! ... KS

Well I took my computer to Delhi with me and my computer expert seems to have found the problem. Nothing to do with Norton. It turns out that the LAN protocol server settings for my GPRS were blocking Broadband BSNL going through. I now have a neat icon on my desktop which enables me to switch between GPRS and Broadband, simply by enabling or disabling this protocol server setting. Broadband went on immediately here in Delhi once it was disabled. We will see what happens when I go back to Jaisalmer. This connection was all through ethernet. So if settings have been loaded for my Jaisalmer connection I should be on immediately. Won't be back for a couple of days then will post if success, and if so, indeed faster than a Driver's Licence!!!
Since I'm a a dopey layman I am hoping my explanation with suitable IT terms is making sense!

Hi Aishah,
Yeah, good for you! ...hope it still works in Jaisalmer! My MTNL Broadband, which has been working so well for last many months, is suddenly acting-up these last 3-4 days ... and though it got corrected once via their Heldesk, is again on the blink. Going thru this thread psotings now to gather knowhow.... KS

Hi KS! I'm writing this from Delhi and this morning when I posted previously somehow my computer didn't open all the posts and am just now reading all of yours. Yes, we are all hopeful things will now start running with Broadband or Fraudband as Nick calls it! And should be able to do it via ethernet and not USB cable. Some useful tips here KS and you can understand them whereas I struggle a bit with the terms - hope yours gets back to normal again. I'm looking forward to seeing ALL your pics from your trip!

and alls well that ends well! I suspect however you might be talking about a proxy server as opposed to a protocol server? Within Internet options on XP is a section which allows you to direct all traffic to a from a browser via a proxy server hosted by your ISP - and as I've discovered airtel GPRs is sent via a proxy. So if you try to use another type of LAN connection (GRPS is configured as a LAN connection, and so is broadband of course) - it will try and route via the airtel proxy - which will be refused because it isn't a airtel connection (not sure if airtel broadband is done this way).

Not quite all's well ending well, I'm afraid. Rigged up everything today, disabled GPRS LAN proxy server, tried via ethernet port to open a page and no luck - I suspect the settings or whatever are not yet configured. However, Mr K tells me 'the man' asked him to ring him when I was back with computer because he now has the correct CD. In other words, he's insisting on going via USB port. And as I don't have user name, can't try that out either. There is an orange light on the modem where it should be green. So it's waiting for 'the man' again...

yeah, what nick said! I'm presuming the orange light is the DSL or status light indicating the router has not authenticated - because it has no password or user id!

......long journey, small steps....

Orange light for DSL on my MT800 'modem' meant it had authenticated.

Green for link, orange for authentication.

Different makes, different lamps, of course. My netgear doesn't differentiate, which is annoying; obviously I can't check the status at a glance. Serves me right for replacing cheap Chinese technology with expensive American technology!
