Large flat screen or not .....?

ok....so enough of small monitors and laser printers, lets talk about some serious hardware.

After many years of resistance I may relent to the many requests of my children and get a flat screen TV. We currently have a less then 2 year old 100mhz digital wide screen which I think is just fine - except for the purple patches that appeared on the screen after we moved

Anyway - so the current thoughts is either an LCD or plasma (or maybe a projector)? I'm thinking maybe 36-42 inch - needs to be HD compatible, have HDMI, etc. But really,

-what brand,
-why,
-and where to go in Delhi?

Any advice oh wise IM tech/ gadget people?

Not that TV is my thing, but from what I've seen, prices of this kind of import are horrendous.

How about moving the TV around a bit, in it's place or a couple of feet. It might be magnetic interference. A wild guess - how about degaussing it? Some TVs automatically degauss themselves when they are turned on; so you might try seducing it, but be prepared for a shock <sorry BB couldn't resist that>.

I recently decided against buying a flat screen HDTV because currently there is no HD content available. The only HD content would be Bluray discs and they are expensive. A full HD TV capable of 1080P is expensive. A good TV will also show up the flaws of current SD broadcast; experienced this at my friend's home.

Brands I would recommend are (not in any order) Panasonic, Sony, Philips. This also depends on the model. For example a certain model of Panasonic might be excellent whereas another model might be average.

Check our Sony Bravia, my uncle got it few months back and he is very satisfied with it..

Check the specs and all, and if you find it suitable, I can help you get a good deal (read out of South Delhi Circle )

de WHAT! and seduce my TV?? I'd be too embarrassed!(and here was I thinking all the drama happened on TV - not with it)!

I remember some of the old CRT monitors I had - there was as degauss option - what is that? Will have a look but I'm pretty sure the TV has been damaged in transit (and not sure it even has a degauss function). thanks Prashant.

thanks for that - will have a look around. What about a projector instead? Any views on that? It may be that we stick with the TV as is, and if we want a really big screen - use a projector instead.

thanks shashank - I may just take you up on that. Also sent a PM to Dilli to see if he had any advice about places to go - guess he must be busy.

And I'll answer right here - haven't bought a TV in ages as ours is 10 years old and going strong. But I guess u got your answers - technical and commercial. I've no idea on the latest tech anyway, like I said earlier I thought HDMI, 1080P, plasma are some kind of new diseases.

Nehru Place is no good for TVs and such like. There was this large speciality store on the Defence Colony/Lajpat Nagar main road dealing in all the latest fancy stuff - damned if I recall the name - Electronic City?

well with Prashant encouraging me to "seduce" my TV - I wouldn't be surprised if I did catch something off it! BTW - nice to see you around!

Nehru Place is no good. The best deals for TV's and related electronics are found in Lajpat Nagar and other markets such as Hauz Khas... there are a few retailers who also tend to serve as wholesalers in the area..these are the guys to go to..

I normall take about 2 days to cover all the shops i need to go to and then play one against the other till i get the lowest price possible...

@Brownboy - i live in Def Col too fyi

I can suggest a few places as well in South Delhi...shops to specific.
