DW... the icon on the desktop does a PPoE 'dial-up' -- another dreadful misuse of terms, yes. It sends the user name and password to the BSNL Authentication Server, which then allows the machine to have access to the server.
Yes, that's exactly how my "modem" works. Didn't know routers cud do the same? At least when MTNL installs a router, they just do it straightway in 'router mode'.
U did mention something though some months ago, re bridged mode working in similar fashion to my device.

<cross-posted>/EDIT:

Wireless routers, however, are notoriously insecure unless you take steps to ensure the wireless link between the router and your PC/ laptop is secure - and that's a whole different lesson to what you're going through at the moment (otherwise you end up supplying internet to the whole neighbourhood).
I deliberately didn't want to go into the details of wireless insecurity becos (a) Aishah has enuff on her plate and (b) the chances are pretty slim in the outback, but this was exactly what I had in mind when I mentioned avoiding wireless earlier. So good point to highlight, bb.

Off to read your Part 2 thread now. Where be Part 1?

Yep... if we're doing a step-by-step here, then I'd have to say --- get the thing working with wires before trying wireless.

Just suggesting she may be able to get a better box at the same price from BSNL. With a bit of arm-twisting!

DSL into the ethernet port is just so much simpler since the PC doesn't need to recognise the device on the end - its simply fires packets at the "lan" connection so to speak. With the USB port - you actually have to set up the PC to recognise the DSL "modem" before you can use it. For windows PCs the application that is closest to being able to do this is dial up connectivity - but it means setting up the DSL device as a "modem" - and loading a password and ID into your PC.

I guess it probably relates to the fact that ethernet is a network technology and protocol - whereas USB is primarily used for peripherals. Hence - from a PC perspective anything connected to the lan port is a network device (doesn't need configuring from the PC) - whereas anything connected to USB needs to be recognised and then configured.

Now reading this a.m. - was sleeping while you fellows had your lively discussions! All very interesting, and much useful info. thanks all esp. Dilliwalla with your step by step instructions- there is also a ADSL Modem icon on the desktop so I guess that's the Device Manager? As Machadinha says, no I don't know these terms but am rapidly learning!(Slight interruption here - had to get the pigs out of the garden!Small ones getting under all our barricades...)
Update - Mr K rang the technician this morning - he is saying that maybe the CD is the wrong one and that they are now hunting in the store for the right one!!! OMG this all has echoes of the Drivers' Licence which is still in progress.. He will eventually come with the right one. However, in the meantime until I get the User Name (one of 2 I chose myself) I can do nothing. Once I have User Name could try via ethernet port as suggested because I do have the connecting cable in the box (it has both, USB and ethernet). So yes, Machadinha, am waiting for that technician...
LOL, bb, 'tough' yes, not sure these days about 'smart'!!! I'm finding my brain and typing fingers out of sync - brain races ahead and I find I've typed a completely different word to what I want sometimes. I proof read everything! Signs of dyslexia in advancing years?? Actually I notice Nick does the same thing sometimes but more with the spelling I think...

Please pass on this message to them....

You don't need any CD; just an ethernet cable

Assuming that your PC has an ethernet port .

They mostly do, these days...

Thanks, Nick! Yes, i do have ethernet on PC and there is a cable in the box! But Mr K is telling me (he's even more ignorant than I am re computers) that they, BSNL, have a certain way of doing this and this is the way it's done (this is a familiar story out this way for EVERYTHING) and we must wait for the man to come. When he comes, I will point all this out. Unfortunately I didn't know anything the first time he came, otherwise could have asked then. Mr K sat beside him, while I lay on the bed looking like I was reading a book but actually half-asleep because it was getting too late for me. After finding about ethernet, I asked Mr K did he try with a connection here, and Mr K said he tried in 2 places, pointing at the USB port and the ethernet one. So there the mystery stands..Now I'm more equipped with knowledge thanks to all here, and when he turns up again will do as you suggest Nick.

Aishah, I think bb and Nick will agree with me that the tech can't be trusted to know about connection thru ethernet if he chose the more complex connection (USB) to start with. And now looking for another CD . Maybe bb wud like to take a trip down? (come on, admit it bb mate, there's nothing that u'd like better ).

It is very easy for u to check whether things are working or not - thru the ethernet port it will run immediately with nothing else to be done by u (u don't need to even know the username/password immediately, presuming BSNL has already done it their end). This is just to check the status of the line. Let's be frank, right now their guess is no better than yours.

U don't even need to delete the previous setup to do this (right, bb? - I only suggested that to remove any poss of doubt with the new connection. Just plug one end of the cable into your comp's ethernet port, the other into the router's ethernet port. If u get three lights on, it's working. Then try and browse a site.

Device Manager: Go to Control Panel, click 'System', click 'Hardware' tab, click 'Device Manager' tab.

yep - if you take the ethernet cable supplied with the router - plug one end into your laptop and the other end into the router then you should get a green light at each end. The next thing to do would be to ensure that your laptop is setup to accept an IP address from the router - and once that is done you should be able to log onto the router and check the setup.

I don't know that you would be able to browse the internet yet since if they haven't given you your user ID and password its unlikely to have been preloaded onto the router.....

She did say that the guy 'entered some numbers' yesterday. And thery cud easily do the rest at the exchange without telling her as yet - when my line was activated, everything was preloaded and the browsing worked immediately (thru MTNL's test router).

Dilliwalla - really appreciate your help here, but I just don't have the time tonight to fiddle around even plugging stuff in. Pretty hectic at the moment. If I get a moment tomorrow in between taking my nephew sightseeing and packing for Delhi, I'll try and give it a go. Mind you, the time I sit here waiting for my GPRS, I could be trying instead! However, i do the ironing the housework and the accounts at the same time, and all these things have to be done too.
