You're making me feel old.

I used to do all that stuff.

Hands up all those who remember soldering a Honeywell 916 bootstrap loader back together?

Erm...

Then I went into communications...

Hi Brishti! Good to see another female in this thread! While waiting to meet someone this morning in a hotel lobby I read an interesting article in Outlook, 3 March re India's problems with Broadband and why low speeds etc. Called 'The Illusion of Movement by Arindam Mukherjee. I'm feeling technically challenged at the moment to try and see if it's online to post a link, but there is a website: www.outlookindia.com if anyone wants to look.
What also took my eye and I didn't know about was BSNL offers a 50,000 rupee Personal Accident Insurance Coverage free to all landline and post paid mobile customers. I wonder if anyone has taken advantage of this and how many people actually know about it? A sop to compensate for their poor Broadband services in some areas? (A full page ad featuring a happy family!)

thanks for putting link in, Nick - Fraudband again off this morning - User Name Password Invalid - thing again. It came up last night, off again now. Mr K rang yesterday - most of Jaisalmer out, and was told this is a common problem?? It gets fixed from Bangalore. Was off all day yesterday until around 8 p.m.

i need help with my dell xps m1330. [naah nick - that aint a bazooka]. i have no idea where to post it. since i'm here -
the dell comes with os vista. i want to change it to an xp - but am informed that vista is 'locked' in with the hardware or some such stuff. its not that simple to just reboot, unlike in the inspiron, vostro etc. do you have any info on the same. dell folks are 'invisible' and their aftersales sucks big big big time. would appreciate any info. thanks.

Sympathy with the Vista, Brishti. It's horrible.

Seems to be part of the Vista conspiracy that some of the newest machines come with bits that only vista has drivers for, although it is also part of the Vista problem that it lacks drivers for some hardware --- or so I hear.

Google can help (nice-looking machine!) I found this

aarrgghhh - vista! The link Nick has given you is excellent. So far as I know there is nothing to physically prevent you from re-formatting the HD and loading another OS (and indeed - having a laptop with a "locked" OS that disables the laptop if you try to unload it would probably be considered anti-competitive in any number of countries)! May pay to check, however, that there isn't something tricky in the laptop BIOS settings that ties it to vista. Since vista is a 64bit operating system (while XP is a 32 bit operating system) I imagine there may be some unique settings/ configs for the hardware to allow it to operate with the (suposedly) faster OS.

More likely as nick mentioned, if there are no drivers for some of the hardware - then you only have the option of using an older driver (eg, it possible to use older vid card drivers on most machines - you just loose a lot of features, but it still works).

good luck.
