TRAI (?) are reporting into this and have invited comments and consultation, so it is possible that change may come, but better not to hold the breath.

The cartel is cosy. Just one private supplier breaking ranks is all it needs....
Well first of all, my original ADSL contract in the UK was for 256k, second, MTNL manage to give me about 2 megs (subject to service interuptions, it is MTNL after all...) when I'm in Bombay and third, I pay 6,000/- a year, which is about a quarter of what I pay in the UK for about a meg...

A lot of that is due to location. I live about 5Km from the exchange in the UK and I'm in North Yorkshire which is pretty rural. When I'm in India I'm on Bombay island where the telecommunications infrastructure is actually quite good and the supporters seem involved with their job rather than involved with their paperwork...

Anyway, the link is good enough at both ends to support Skype conversations of hours in length without more than a couple of drop-outs.

6000 rupees a year?

I pay 900 a month for BSNL's 256K unlimited data.

Mine (BSNL) is also 6000 per annum - it is 600 per month but if you pay it as one off for the year you get this reduction. It has download/upload of 2.5GB and is called Home 500 C+. It also includes the rental for the telephone line with 50 free calls.
Mind you, I've already complained here a few times how it drops out every now and then. This morning it was out for a few hours.

'Limited' plan. U pay a buck or so per mb after hitting the monthly d/l limit (yup, free upload!).

MTNL's unlimited plan went down to 800/month in Jan, so I guess BSNL shud be following suit in a few years, I mean, months.

Its not a silly question at all. In the early days of dial up there used to be a process called "multilink PPP" which enabled you to aggregate bandwidth across a number of connections. So if you had 2 or 3 modems - you could dial them up in sequence - and if you got say 48k per connection, then that would be 48k x 3, and so on. 2 Conditions - all the connections had to be to the same ISP, and that ISP had to support multilink.

Even now - there are some ISPs with satellite services that use the satellite for download - but upload is done via a phone line (makes for a cheaper satellite connection since receive only satellite kit is much cheaper than one which is receive and transmit).

Interesting re multi-connections. I often wondered before whether Dial-Up Landline and GPRS combined would have speeded things up. With different ISP not a chance.

I would recommend Tata Sky as their quality of transmission and quality of support is better than that of DishTV. Aishah why don't you check if you can get digital transmission from cable TV providers like Hathway. It might be cheaper and will have a lot more channels than analog. It will also need an STB. You can also check out BSNL's IPTV i.e. TV signal over your broadband line; but with the number of dropouts that you are experiencing I am not sure if it's a good option.

hmmm...its the same concept on which ISDN worked, each line was 64 Kbps, and to increase the speed speed to 128k you have to use 2 line..ISDN has simple faded away..in India in never became too popular..

Prashant - our choice here is only the local cable operator whose name is Star Vision, or Dish TV. Not sure what else available beside Tata Sky in the latter area. So we are stuck with just that. I'm really envious of big cities' choice here - even Star Movies has poor quality reception but Star World is perfect. In fact for the reason of TV being so limited here - I juggle between NDTV news and the other two channels - I barely watch it - more time for here! And reading books...
Broadband is not that satisfactory - daily dropouts - but it's enough for my needs.

THEY do. But I don't recommend them.
Actually I don't recommend any of Tata's stuff, cars, internet
Except sometimes they're the only ones around, or the competition is Reliance (don't even start me on THOSE buggers! )
