The invertor shudn't affect the DSL speed.

Doesn't it make the motor in the modem run faster or slower if the voltage changes?

I thought about that, which is why I said shudn't rather than won't! Mine's bus-powered and therefore doesn't "suffer" from UPS power, which is why I can't say for sure.
I do recall that when I had a mains/UPS-powered dialup modem, the bloody thing used to slow down even further whenever the power went. But I'm thinking DSL's a different 'wave' altogether, so maybe not..... |

You have a bus outside your place providing power?
Have you looked at the small diesel generators that are available these days? . . . . . . I think its time I went to bed ![]() |

Ok, for the less-enlightened, mine's powered directly off the PC's system-bus. (Don't ask me to explain further, I'm already at the outer limit of my tech-speak). |

Bus power??? My invertor is powered by 2 truck batteries!! When I use invertor it doesn't make much difference to the speed at all. Sometimes modem needs re-setting on changeover, sometimes not. No big deal. I've now learned if the winking light comes on it simply means the LAN connection is getting ready or the BSNL server is out of action. This happens daily at some point or other. It comes back again eventually. Fraudband, Nick - I think I agree with you here!

Serial ports, to which real modems (dial-up) are connected have a thing called a UART.
The data in a computer is parallel. That is, roughly, 8-bit data moves along eight parallel paths. But in a serial connection, the bits follow oneanother down a single path. So the UART is like a water wheel, moving along the parallel paths, collecting one bit from each, and pouring it into the single-line serial connector. This is definitely voltage sensitive, as a power drop will cause the wheel to slow down. I know this, because this is exactly how it looked in the text books. If you're not very careful, I might explain about serial mice, bus mice and dedicated mice... |

time to call pest control.....
UART - goodness, haven't heard that in a long time. Next will come the discussion of 16450 versus 16550 UART with FIFO (remember FIFO nick)? |

Okay, bb, don't keep us in 'suspenders' (me anyway) - what is FIFO? In simple layman's terms please!
Interesting explanation, thanks Nick. How do you know if you have a serial port, serial connection etc? Speaking of serials, this thread is a bit like one too! |

FIFO is easy: first in, first out. Errr... I think!
GIGO is a more interesting concept, an perhaps applicable to my current series of posts ![]() UARTS... yes, it sticks in the mind... but I never had more than a layman's appreciation of what they do. The 9- pin "D" connector on the back of your PC will be a serial port. Desktops probably still have them, I don't know about laptops. Maybe, as dial up modems do still exist, but I suppose laptops tend to have them built in. |

Not at all - good interesting stuff. Ah yes - if you've ever done help desk support or systems admin then GIGO will definitely be present. spot on with FIFO too. Quote:

Yes, I think so, even the parallel port for the printer is seldom needed these days.
I used to have the wiring for 25-pin serial in my head, for connecting terminals. I now realise it isn't there any longer! Well, in some dusty, dim braincell, I guess... Even had a vague idea what some of those signals did, and why what was connected to what! And using a breakout box, with its pretty lights, was always a certainty to impress the customer, whether I understood it or not! |

GIGO? no idea what you blokes are joking about.. Going In, Getting Out? My laptop just has ethernet and USB from what I can make out re ports. Is this all superseded technology?
Talking of printers - where do I connect it to if I get one? Mmm - some funny looking places around the laptop (why don't they give you a decent handbook when you buy these - I only had a receipt with guarantee plus a bit of advertising paper) I really would like to know what all the keys do. I looked for books in Delhi but they were so outdated. A handbook for this model would be brilliant. I'll wait for the expert to tell me about setting up the printer I think..lucky I have found one! |

Nearly all printers (if not all) come with USB connection these days. Just check that it does.
Hint: compare the cost of replacement cartridges before buying, and get one with individual-colour cartridges, not just one, or one black and one colour. I like my Canon, but I don't know about comparative costings. |

I think just black will do me for the sort of work I need it to do - which isn't too much. Currently I have to go to market to print off anything. I'm hoping this sort of outdated type of model might prove cheaper! Canon is a good brand, thanks for advice, Nick.
(OT - Nick you will laugh at this! I need a new proof of address - and only yesterday I figured I could do it myself on my Microsoft office (which I've never used before) then send it as an attachment to myself, then go to market and print it off! Mr K takes it to the local notary for attesting and stamped with govt. stamp. To date, I've written three proofs of address myself and this has been done and accepted - the first I had to find a typewriter in the market.) |
