I thought BB had an STB; if so then it's digital.

yup very true. I am also not exactly fond of the way Tata Sky operates (understatement) but no denying the quality of transmission.

Along with the CAS-thru-STB digital beam, many local cable operators in Del are still giving some free channels (about 60) thru the analog beam as in the old days, both beams coming thru a single cable. Australia, NHK Japan, a coupla Doordarshan regional, and a few other Indian channels are not on the digital beam.
This package is also what's available (in our area, it varies obviously) for those who don't want to buy/rent an STB, and pay lump-sum as before.

I reckon you're right about the local cableman's 'blackmail'!I think I'm the only one in Jaisalmer who watches Star World at 3 p.m. because all channels will be fine but frequently that one has the sound down - and Mr K or myself have to ring them. I'm sure they think it's very funny! Sometimes they get it back in a few minutes after the phone call, sometimes not. Also they won't pay for BBCWorld which is why we don't get it. They seem to forget there are many hotels here with English speaking visitors who watch TV in their rooms from time to time and would appreciate this channel.

umm....the STB says "IN digital". So I'm presuming everything being transmitted down the wire is digital?

Well if you were a chicken farmer in Bengal dealing with the bird flu outbreak you would probably be saying:

the sky is fine, but the chickens are falling, the chickens are falling ....

Okay time to add cable/Cas/DTH to the thread title...

And I guess I can see the 'drift' towards chickens and bird flu now..

LOL re chickens - but not really... pretty terrible for the farmers. Shashank - I reckon you're right re extra title on thread - we seem to have covered most of the other stuff already on title.

Interesting! So when the cable is directly connected to a TV, the TV can tune only to the analog channels and digital channels are ignored. When connected to an STB, STB tunes only to the digital channels. Is my guess correct?

No I don't. I work in the Audio Video or rather consumer electronics domain. Definitely not an expert.

bb, if u have Hathway, then Oz Channel is not on digital. To check - turn off your STB. Can u still see it? Have u got your TV tuned the 'normal' usual way, and do u watch digital on a particular TV channel, let's say no. 37, and to change the digital channels u use the remote from the STB? And if u turn off the STB, no. 37 goes blank?
Another check, if u haven't done so - keep the STB off, then tune your TV with the 'auto' function. After all the channels have been stored, check whether u get Oz channel among others.

Lastly, another check - what channel no. is Oz Channel on? (It has to be the same city-wide if it's on Hathway digital)

Prashant, I think you are correct - The cable goes directly into the STB, which is then hooked to a 'Video' channel on the TV - to see the diff digital channels, I just flick the buttons on the STB's remote. Additionally, the TV channels (1 onwards) are tuned the 'normal' way as described above and pick up the 60 or so analog channels, including one on UHF which picks up the STB's frequency as well. I don't have to keep shifting the cable from TV to STB or vice-versa.
I'm sure if the cable were connected directly to the TV as u describe, it wud pick up the analog channels only.

ok - its definitely digital - we don't get any reception if the STB is off - plus I remember the reason we got this particular service was that it was the only one that showed the encrypted version of the Australia channel (and its channel 1000 and something of the pay TV channels we have).
