Now Prashant, I didn't say you watched soaps, if you read my post I only say how proficient you are with IT stuff! That's quite different to actually watching them!!(How did you manage to wean Mrs P off them?? Mr K couldn't, he just goes to sleep if it's hot afternoon nap time and lets me carry on as usual!)But right at this moment we have a power cut and in 15 mins. next episode is starting so looks like I might have to read your link to catch up instead!
Shashank - you guessed rightly re cost, we have 7 TV's in all. And now I'm off to check if all phases are gone, and if cable station is out as well..

Well, what you actually said was:

Quote:
managed to get some wonderful hints from Prashant ( ) on how to cope without TV at 3 p.m. Mon.-Fri and not get withdrawal symptoms!!!
which as you correctly state is not actually saying that Prashant watches soap operas - however, in order to advise you on how to overcome a lack of 3pm TV and not get withdrawal symptoms would imply fore knowledge of what programmes are available at 3pm - which means watching soap operas!

Thankfully India TV and the various cable channels are not completely overwhelmed by survivor type reality shows yet. What was the one I read about the other day - a survivor type show involving fashion designers!

Bingo....I think you have it in one. We don't get the all day power cuts other areas in Delhi get - but in summer they can last for a few hours at a time - or you'll get those 7 or 8 powers cuts in rapid succession throughout the day (I think the most I counted in one day was 12).

Plus depending on how far the cable run is from the hub - undoubtedly the link will go through a number of areas before getting here - and who knows how many power cuts there are along the way.

BB- check out my later post 218 - I did clarify it before he posted!!! And what's that cute bunny doing with wiggly ears before his name????? Amazing what animation throws up! Somebody the other day started telling me about these survivor shows on TV - sounded absolutely ghastly.
Power cuts much the same here like yours, bb. We were having 8a.m.-11 a.m. and then 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.Today they changed it to 2p.m. - 4 p.m. and my guess is this is going to last a week - so it'll be back to reading Prashant's link all week...

I was just getting back at BB . We have only one TV and the programs I watch are infinitely more interesting than Soaps. If we had more TVs than I would most probably have failed.

BB..by the way what are you paying for cable ?

Assuming that you have power backup arrangements, I guess your cable doesn't work when its a failure in your Area..you can actually go for a DTH service, which is fairly cheap these days..excellent quality by the way..

ok....what's a DTH (there's an abbreviation I'm not familiar with)???

As for the cost - I can't complain. Since it was hooked up last year they haven't sent us a bill yet!

Direct to Home, or in plain simple English - Tata Sky or Dish TV.

We're going to look into DTH (now I know what your initials mean, Dilliwalla) because we think it will be cheaper in the long run. Another one on the 'Things to Do List'.
BB - I enjoy your jokes! I knew you were having fun, and at the same time I'm laughing at myself, too, my friends back in Oz and NZ would be horrified that I now watch a soap at 3p.m. - it's not only the soap, it's having the TV on in the DAY!

Tata sky has slashed rates here in Hyderabad. Must be countrywide.

yeah, we've been thinking about dish TV. The only reason we have cable is due to the fact we can get both the encrypted and unencrypted programmes on the Australia Channel - which also includes sports coverage from NZ (whereas the satellite version of the australia channel is the free to air programming only).

Aishah, I don't think it will be cheaper than your existing cable connection. Rs.500 for 7 TVs is pretty good. I think Tata Sky has slashed the rate for hardware, not the monthly subscription rate. I have Tata Sky at home and quality of transmission is very good. Monthly subscription rate would be the package you choose for the first TV and 50% of that for any additional TV. I have opted for Rs.300 monthly subscription. If I add another TV then it would be 450 (300+150). You will also have to purchase the Set Top Box (STB) for every additional TV.

Better we stay with what we have by the sounds of it, Prashant! I'm a bit like Nick btw, since BBC World, HBO, have been dropped by the cable people I don't watch it that much either (apart from my regular 3 p.m.show!)Just NDTV News now and then. Star Movies doesn't have much on - and also the quality of transmission for that one is poor. Lucky people in Delhi have a huge range of movies, and Australia Channel,BB? Wow!
More of my spare time lately is for reading and IM!

Oh, u get it too? But, umm, it's not on Hathway. My local guy is beaming it on analog, isn't your arrangement the same?

Yes, Aishah, there are a few benefits to living in a big city.
While the costs of DTH may not be justified in your case, it completely eliminates local-operator blackmail, i.e. high charges, channels-of-choice not shown, etc. You then have the privilege of BIG Business blackmail only . (bb and I have a few choice things to say about Tata).
