I do find that there is a type of sales person in India, usually female, who has actually read the catalogue.

In fact, she has memorised the catalogue: specifications, features, prices and all, in great detail. They may not have an in-depth understanding, but at least you won't get home to find that what you thought was the 5-litre, 250-watt model, in fact is only 3 litres and 120 watts. If I ran PC-World (God forbid) I'd employ a few thousand of these ladies.

and don't you just love it when you find someone like that. Suddenly it doesn't matter how crappy the shop might be, or that the goods are maybe a bit more expensive then they should be - you've found someone who knows what their doing - so you don't have to be the expert.....

I'm wondering whether others using Broadband are having some problems with it yesterday and today? Mine seems to be positively erratic, sometimes good and sometimes at a complete standstill. Have they got that cable undersea fixed yet?? Are others experiencing this behaviour with their connections?

Haven't heard anything as to whether or not repairs have been completed - but the broadband is working just fine here in Delhi.

Maybe just a local area thing from time to time - starting to go faster in the last 10 mins. Local BSNL mobiles have been peculiar here too today, sometimes not a sound after you press 'call'. So maybe a tower is not so good..(actually I haven't a clue, as you know, how these things work!)All to do with telephone wires so maybe the local exchange is having problems...

you're developing quite a knack for this! Chance are you may have hit the nail on the head.

Any local cellphone tower will undoubtedly be connected to the exchange (for some reason or another people tend to assume that when you make a mobile call its a wireless connection all the way to the recipient - when in fact what happens is that the cell phone call hits the nearest tower (usally one of 2 or 3), then goes via circuit (phone line to the exchange) to where ever the destination is. Long and short of it - in some remote locations every thing is on the same bunch of circuits heading out of town - cell phone, broadband, voice calls, etc - and if that circuit is cut, overloaded, etc - everything gets affected.

Yes, bb! And that I think is what the problem is - again this morning I couldn't even connect Broadband - connected GPRS which ran nicely for a short time then started going far too slow. Switched to dial-up, then gave up. All the ATM's also were out this morning, but after light came back (power) around 11 a.m. ATM's were back on again. I've concluded this is just a local area problem and I shan't post again, everytime I have failure to connect! Now all running normally..

I won't trust BSNL to be as competent as Airtel or some other reputed private service provider..

I am using a Sify connection, and I has hardly let me realize the difference with broken cables..

The only problem was that the downloads we working fine at full capacity of the connection, my POP mails were working as they shud, however I was not able to do browsing..

Two of my friend's have Sify - one in Delhi and one in Udaipur - occasionally they also have the odd breakdown. Maybe not as often as BSNL, but now and then I've had them complaining re their connections. Also speeds are varying too.

Sify depends a lot on Last mile connectivity..its runs on cable..i.e. I am not a part of all those modems and routers discussions...my internet runs from LAN Card..

Sify connection also depends on the support from the local CT0 (I guess Cable TV Office) who work as franchisee of Sify..as they are one who maintain last mile connectivity..

One of the things I'm learning here is that for telco network infrastructure only some of the equipment has power backup. For example - our TV cable connection does down every time there is a power cut - not because of an outage here (we have UPS and a generator) but because some of the cable switching/ amp equipment is not power protected. I'm assuming, therefore, that the same would apply for some telecom services.

In addition to power protection, there's also the small matter of circuit diversity. Basically for any town/ city you would want a couple of major circuits (if not more) heading out of town on different geographic routes. If that isn't there then you have a single point of failure.

The cable tv lines probably go through many buildings, with amplifiers and other crap plugged in there.

So, if anything on the route has a power outage, you won't get TV.
