LOL, Dilliwalla - Modem Routers??? A new initial, no longer M/R now it's MR! Most of computer jargon has me confused - stuff like, surfing, phishing, browser, window, blah, blah, blah. I've had to learn ANOTHER b**** language! Think I'll make a latte with my new espresso machine!!

Latte? Mocha? I've never understood that terrible coffee-drinkers' jargon!

As for sales-persons' expertise: try UK's PC World. Vast, warehouse-sized shops, full of assistants who don't know ram from a rabbit, but will tell you they do.

Or,"Chai Tea Latte"

Honest, that's what they called it.

Now that I've switched animation back on in the Internet Options advanced area I am laughing heartily here! They do make a difference to the tone of the post!! rabbits and rams Nick?? Don't tell me there's a rabbit in my PC - I don't even know what a ram is!! And a latte is espresso coffee with lots of frothy milk! Chai latte takes the cake though, Captain, and I did try one in NZ - very insipid with the spices I thought.

It's much better than their coffee.

Thing with the tea, too, is that they give you such a huge volume of it with the amount of spices a roadside guy in India would put in a tiny glass

That's why I thought it not spicy enough for me - I like a good masala brew/ lots of ginger or cardamon! But you do get a big glass, that's true. I'm off to Wikipedia to find out what a ram is... later.. what a dope! of course I knew it all the time! won't even mention it anymore it's too simple for words!!

Funnily enuff, my earlier problem stopped when I exchanged "modems" with my friend. Seems mine was buggering up my sys regularly - it works fine on his PC and his one's working fine here.

I understand women better than I understand computers (specially MS-based). That's saying quite a lot, innit?

But on a number of occasions (since I moved from good old 9X to NT) Safe mode has been mostly Unsafe.
Like I said women, computers.......(sigh)

Probably a world-wide phenomenon. I visit Delhi's premier IT market at Nehru Place from time to time. To put it in short, most of them cud well be selling fruit and veg if they cud earn the same, they have the most superficial knowledge and cud care less. Ther whole market mentality is just "profit-oriented" - whatever sells short-term. Small example: Seagate makes 6 different HDD's of 80 Gb just for desktops, at the most u'll find 2 at NP. This when the co. itself has a major sales and support presence.

Possibly, but only if the battery's made by Duracell.
U cud check - do u hear cymbals when u're running it in battery-mode? That'll be the rabbit doing his thing.

you understand women?! (yes I know you said more than computers - but that implies some level of understanding).

bit harsh to be using designations for the women you know (and who was the good old 9x)? And they have a safemode ?? When did this happen!!

Ok, rephrase -
I understand computers less than I understand women.

I'm serious. Women are more logical than computers.

(I wonder if I've just started another sub-thread, which will cause another change in the title after a few pages )

LOL, fellows and I liked your little rabbit joke Dilliwalla! bb, you asked just the question I was about to pose on reading Dilliwalla's post 188. I also wondered what an MS-based woman might be like???
Re selling computer stuff - I think it's like a lot of places the buyer has to have the knowledge for the picking and choosing. The ones behind the counter are just there to show things and take your money. I think this is a world phenomenon. Young staff have little training in knowledge of the products they are selling. Although, I was very impressed with the boy who sold my coffee machine - he knew where everything fitted when he demonstrated it to me!

Yes, of course your right - but I don't believe that should be a deterrent for people demanding better services and more knowledge from the "experts" they deal with. Firstly computers, broadband services, etc - cost a significant sum of money. Secondly - there are very few services/ appliances like broadband/ computers that let the outside world into your house in the same way (and the associated risks that incurs in terms of your private information, bank accounts, precious photos, etc). For these reason alone - the experts should know better.

Of course you can't change the world - but at the very least you can try and find the person who doesn't rely on constant jargon and clichés, who knows what it is they are dealing with and can tell the difference between device A and device B, who has taken the time to learn the detail of what they are doing - then you can have some confidence in what they are saying or selling you.

That won't be a thread, that will be a rope.

It may even be a noose in some cases, specially if we are given enough rope.
