It's not politics, Aishah - I agree with bb, just call it a router, becos that's what u have. It was never a modem, too much inexactitude by MTNL/BSNL staff and others only leads to confusion. You don't call your computer a washing-machine, do u?

(Waiting for Capt to come up with a washing machine joke )

It also records daily, weekly, monthly volume stats.

here's the link if you want to have a look -

oh, and its thank you ware (it doesn't cost anything - you simply have to say thank you to the author).
BB ... Thanks; Just finished installing and running Bitmeter ( had to install Dot Net Framework 1.1 first) .... Bitmeter is great ... especially Historical Stats should be useful.... KS

Dilliwala ... thanks for this Link. This MTNL meter is pretty nifty & much easier to use ... very Useful for a quick read on current speed ... Thanks!... KSB

PS: BTW, there seems to be a lot of useful stuff on this thread's recent posts ..... have'nt had time to read all that yet ... but will do so over next few days. .

its a good little application (hard to believe its free). Keeping it running on the desktop is useful because as soon as the MTNL/ BSNL connection slows down or stops - the real time graph picks it up straight away.

Very useful for people on the move with laptops who not only want real time monitoring of performance - but need a record of monthly traffic volumes.

That Bitmeter sounds alright yes. Just dropping a note that that .Net Framework package is quite a bit larger than you might expect if I recall correctly, that is to say as so often these days it looks innocently small alright, but during the actual installation it starts pulling in a whole lot more. If you're low on disk space, you might want to forget about installing it. Anyway one can always try, then cancel or uninstall if it turns out too massive, of course.

ps My vote Aishah: Just call it a modem. That's what everyone I know does, techies included

.Net Framework? Jeees... I had to install that to run one piece of Nokia software once (Bastards!). It is a big download, and took about three hours to install.

Try Bandwidth Monitor Pro --- small and simple, and doesn't require any extra MS Jiggery Pokery to make it work.

The pros may correct me, but as far as I know, .Net is just a solution that MS have persuaded some developers is ...errr ...a solution, but is actually bugger all good for anything.

LOL - hands up anyone who can name a small, problem free Microsoft application or developers framework!? Lets see - service pack one and 2 for the OS, goodness knows how many patches and updates for explorer, shockwave for flash content, direct x for the active content, adobe for PDFs, various other readers for graphic, audio files - I'm lost count of the number of apps, languages, protocols, and programmes I've downloaded just to make various pieces of software work. Oh well - that's technology for ya.

oh....my suggestion, call it Oscar! If you're really going to give inanimate objects names might as well give it something with a bit of character!

Indeed. Then with any luck (certainly using that one ineffable company name's products) it all clogs up & you might as well get yourself a new box to start afresh. Would agree btw that .Net thingy seems mostly designed to make you need it sometimes Oh well, I find one gets by without it. Remember my old 386 with fondness. Wasn't all that long ago even. Schniff. One could surf on it even I believe (well, TelNet presumably, and anyway all the web wasn't Flashing all over you for no good reason yet.) Not to mention the box that came before it that would know WordPerfect and a very light version of PacMan upon feeding it about 10 floppies for lack of a harddisk. Ah, gone are the days...

I don't know, I still find that electronic eraser aka delete and backspace button the most handy application of the whole thing. As opposed to typewriters, I mean (remember having to start that whole page anew because of one typo, or fumbling around with Tippex?) Makes you wonder sometimes why you'd need several gigs of RAM for it though.

Anyway, don't mind me trying to overtake the Grumpy One here

he he, yeah....not only are most gadget names deadly dull - looking at the world of PC components you get the distinct idea that IT is inhabited by a lot of frustrated males - what with hard drives, ram, and my personal favourite - floppys!

Bottom line - if its goes it doesn't matter what the technology is called - just call me happy . If, however, you're in a shop and someone is selling you this stuff - or someone is giving you advice - they should know the difference between a hub and an intelligent switch, between a router and a modem, between CDMA 1x and GPRS, between EVDO and HSPDA, etc. No one is asking for 100% perfection, but if you're giving someone your money, or your trust - they should know the difference, and they should care enough to know the difference.

pps - I know what you mean re software clogging up your machine! And then to add insult to injury - you have to download special software designed to help you un-clogg your machine (like the m*soft malicious software removal tool - you end up using it to remove other m*soft software - oh the irony)! Definitely one of the advantages of open source - the OS and apps always seem to be smaller.

anyway - time to sign off. Goodnight all.

..not to mention crashing for no reason at all.
U think u cud come out of Safe Mode SAFELY, but NO! I restart, and Windows won't load becos a dll file's missing! Reload the crap (repair not successful), to add insult to injury some driver backups knocked out (long story), and then I have to d/l the DSL driver with a dialup connection!
And the stupid manufacturer has removed the driver from their site - thank goodness for driverguide.com, finally have it.

bb, mate
FYI, here's the link for the ADSL USB "modem" I'm currently using. This is the new model, I'm using the older (V2) model.

And just to make u (and maybe Nick) truly miserable, and Aishah even more confused
they even make DSL MODEM ROUTERS!!
