commerical messages on mobile phones - solution?

Hey there,
I was told by a friend that if one sends "START DND" to 1909, I would not be receiving any more messages on available cooking classes, apartments, friends, etc. I got an automated reply from from 1909 stating that they will send me my confirmation details soon. My friend said it takes about a month. Has anyone tried this? Or has anyone any other idea?
Come to think of it, is there any way to stop these sing-song calls without going all way through customer care of vodafone/airtel?
thanks!

Call the customer care ask them to put you in DND. Go to their website and put yourself in DND.

I got it done when it started, and my life is considerable peaceful, with a stray marketing call here and there (Cold calls).

I have tried it and it works. The only catch is that the messages which are sent by the service provider stops but the others continue. My service provider is Vodafone

1909 works.... for a while atleast as i have discovered. i hadnt received unsolicited sms in 6 months after i registered with 1909, now one occasionally comes up once every few days. but this i think is from having left my phone number in numerous customer registration forms all over the place....

as per law the operator and the dnd registry have 45 days to put your name on the rigister but in practice it happens with less than a month. usually in a week.

if you receive messages after a 1909 registration you'd have to call them to report the numbers. keep you number to your self and do not leave it in any form and you should be safe.

Whilst your service provider can abstain from sending out its own spam messages, there is a limit to how effective it can be at stopping other companies' spam.

I understand that one can still complain about it to your cell provider. I don't know what they do. Shashank, any clue?

Last time I checked with them, they told me that a letter is dispatched to offending establishment.

Now I do not even bother to complain about it as the calls are like 2-3 a month, and simply tell them that I am in DND and not to call me again.

The only messages I get are from the service providers like my bank (regarding statements, transactions etc), mobile operator (regarding bills, due dates etc) etc. Once is a blue moon I get a solicitation message, or I get message from the establishments where I have registered.

the 1909 complaint is not retained by the operator it is sent to the NDND Registry http://ndncregistry.gov.in/ndncregistry/index.jsp (National Do Not Call Registry). this is maintained by the Department of Telecom and the operators are empowered and obligated under their rules to take action against erring telemarketers.

The only fly in the ointment is unregistered operators who do not use automated tools but individual sim cards or some other way to send UCC.

NDNC works with respect to all manner of registered tele marketers not just your operator. how ever if you do receive a call or sms reporting the number to the operator will ensure that person in whose name it is registered will be fined and he will no longer help the unauthorized people.

Edit: Nick: the operator forwards the complaint to the operator to who the number belongs and they fine the offender. it works but the unregistered folks can just change numbers... but even tually the long arm of the law will catch up with them (sorry couldnt resist )
