Thanks!
Thanks guys! We decided to get the Nikon D50. It is scheduled to come in the mail on Tuesday.
Our poor kitties will be the guinea pigs for all the first photos.

Good choice, the D50 is a great camera. It's not a pro camera but very good for travelling with being small and robust. Nice easy access features I didn't notice for a while are the 'change the ISO speed' and 'change the image type' short cuts (I never read the instruction book...). Irritating omissions/UI cock ups are no easy way to change the metering mode, AF area too easily changed by accident, Programme rotary dial too easily changed by accident.
Now, to the lens - this is the most important part of your set up and using a bad lens ruins your new investment. Do not use the standard kit lenses that Nikon put with the D50, they're cheap but rubbish. If you can afford it the best lens for general purpose use is the AF-S Nikkor 18 - 200 mm f/3.5-5.6 ED VR. It's not the highest quality by pro standards but excellent for amateur use and wins on results/features/size/weight/cost trade off. It costs about $700 but is worth it if you are interested in the quality of your pics. Read a detiled review here. Also useful is an extra battery. I found that with careful use of the screen on the D50 (turn off the auto preview) a battery lasts about a week in typical use, but tends to register full for ages then go flat quickly. Also wise is an extra memory card or two to spread the pics around - keep the used cards away from your camera so if it does get stolen (amazingly unlikely in India considering everything) you still have your precious pics. Enjoy your new toy... Last edited by hellesangel : May 29th, 2006 at 14:08. |

Just a quick warning for others on the Casio EX-Z750 and Z760. Casio is having LCD display failure issues. According to their tech rep. My first either easily broke or failed and the retailer replaced it after I bought it 5 days previously. I think the larger display means the more easily damaged. I really like the Fuji CCD. Nice colors.
