bye bye Tata Indicomm - hello Airtel

so we've just swapped over from Tata Indicomm to Airtel

why did we persist for so long with tata! Getting connected on Airtel from scatch took 12 hours in total (from having no phone at all - to being up an running on the network). I'm shocked ! Consider the following:

Documentation - aside from our ID cards, photos, copies of passport, Tata also wanted a copy of our landlords voter registration card! The shop staff clearly didn't have a clue about what proceedures they should have been following. Airtel only required the standard documentation plus a letter outlining what we wanted. It took a total of 10 minutes filling in forms at which point they handed over our new sim cards!

Services - we asked tata for tolls, roaming, and voicemail. It took 4 weeks to get tolls up and running, 14 weeks to get roaming activated, and close to 30 weeks to get voice mail running. Our airtel phone was up and running with everything as of last night - 8 hours after we signed up. Getting the voice mail activated was a breeze - you just txt in an activation code and its running (nice clear documentation on how to do it came with the sim card).

Customer friendly - goodness knows how many visits we made to tata to get services up and running, and of course when our phone failed to work they didn't want to know about it. By comparison - Airtel came and visited us and couldn't have been nicer.

sigh.....

Good.

Must warn you, though, that Airtel too (like many others) will go all out to sell but after sales service isn't too great.

May be better than Tata, from your account

One example, the second time they disconnected my wife's mobile phone (for user identification copies, the first of which was given seven years earlier and the last one a year earlier), I had to threaten to stand at the entrance of their office barring customers from entering or leaving before they reconnected it again.

oh well, we will see what happens. If there are some after sales problems, at least the sign up process with airtel has been totally painless. With tata - is was painful all over the place!

If we do have problems with airtel - can I borrow you for few hours? Happy to pay with cheesecake!

I was just trying to help the Good Cap'n get some rum from the Delhi Meetup. Maybe I should have mentioned the long straw also . I also could not let you get away with just a Cheesecake . Hey I do make an useful post now and then; more then than now .

Your next challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to close your account with Tata and stop them from charging you money every month

And of course Prashant you do - your input is always.....insightful(hadn't thought about rum for the Delhi meetup - good idea). I didn't actually think you would use the croc - but have to admit it looks good up there on the post (would make a good avatar for a moderator don't you think - maybe nicknamed "the creepy one"?)

of course my fear now is that the cheesecake has been built up so much that anything less than a spectacular desert may result in said person barring the entrance to our house in protest!

oh yes - I'm fully expecting that one to be a challenge - but there are a couple of things in our favour. First off - we pay them manually by cheque every month (its not deducted automatically or anything like that). Secondly - if they dispute it and want to try sending someone around - I'll be ready with the first aid kit to help treat their wounds - once the dog has taken a bite out of them!

Yes Airtel are no better than any other indian telco. After sales service is nothing to boast about.

The only way I have got them to sort out problems is to get in touch with their CEO. Thats what it takes to get any response from Airtel.

BSNL can actually be caused to sort stuff out if you can get hold of a senior officer and explain your problem in person. On the phone they are useless.

I've had good results with both accounting and technical problems.
