Not all residents have post paid. Mrs N and I have an assortment, and I do not have a post-paid sim at all --- but I had to give my aardhar card for mey pre-paid sims.

This is, hopefully, irrelevant for visitors.

Procedure for OCI/Foreigners/NRIs/Elderly to validate their SIM: Dec 1, 2017 DOT memo

Department of Telecomm issued a memo to all cellular carriers on how to authenticate NRI/OCI/Foreigners/Elderly etc. who are unable to provide Aadhaar for verification.

The memo, forms, and step-by-step procedures for TSP (Telecom Service Provider)

Annexure-I is for foreigners without Aadhaar.

There are other Annexures and outlined procedures for NRI & Senior Citizens in the same memo.

Enjoy

Till there are new directives from DOT - The memo dated December 1, 2017 remains the latest

Four options (actually only IVRS is available so far):

i=A - Fn no Aadhaar

no - that's not it

ii=B - NRI

no - nor that

iii=C - Over 70's - try that

- what's that about Indian National - isn't Aadhaar for Residents? - that's no good

iv=D - Aadhaar and registered mobile - this must be it (and it's available...)

aah - nationality again - Oh feck!**

Thumbs down Airtel SIM purchased at Mumbai airport shut off after 3 months

So last year I got an Airtel SIM at CP in Delhi and it was fine for 5 months. The year before, I got an Airtel SIM in Mumbai, off Lamington Road, which was fine for 3+ months.

THIS year, I got an Airtel SIM at the BOM airport and the guy wasn't even interested in my hotel address, didn't have me fill in the forms, just took copies of my passport and visa (and maybe a photo, I don't recall) and that was it. I was suspicious that my SIM card wouldn't even be activated, but it was.

However, my SIM card shut off after 3 months because I'm a tourist. My visa is good for 6 months but I had to get a new SIM, with a new number.

So I schlepped to the nearest Airtel store (an hour away). When I asked if I could keep my old number and have the SIM reactivated, "Not possible" was the reply. When I asked for a balance transfer of the data plan (Rs349 for 1 month which was done 7 days ago), and the extra 2GB of data that was purchased the night before it shut off (Rs99) and my calling balance (some Rs300+) I was told, "Not possible".

So now I have to give everyone my new number, and had to make a special trip to the closest Airtel store (or else suffer through 1-2 weeks of no data/no phone while the local top-up shop collects applications and waits to send them in all at once), and lose Rs748 in the process.

To add insult to injury, the Airtel shop staff said that my new data/calling plan will increase to Rs410 per month because "all new numbers are no longer eligible for the old plan".

All I can say is...next time I won't be getting an Airtel SIM at the BOM airport. Despite it being illegal, I may just ask a local friend to get a SIM for me because changing my phone number in the middle of the season and all that cash is just...wrong. The Indian government really dropped the ball on this one!

In past three weeks, I know of two tourists on e-visa who got an Airtel in DEL International, who got a ₹399 plan.

I have been waiting all day for the black helicopters to land:
A few days ago I emailed Jio about the SIM I bought with a JioFi mifi - here is the reply:
Quote:
Dear Customer,

I understand you have a query with regards to Aadhaar reverification.

If you have purchased the Jio mobile number through eKYC Aadhaar based process, you need not to do eKYC re-verification.

However if you have given your Aadhaar card as POA & POI and activation has done by paper mode you are required to do eKYC re-verification.

Hope I have resolved your query.

For further clarification, you can write to us at care@jio.com

Well I did get it through 'eKYC Aadhaar based' and there had been no problem about 'Nationality' and as I have a non-reverified Airtel SIM I decided to call 14546. - assuming that I must have mis-heard the second (Nationality) question I pressed '1' and after juggling two phones out on the balcony trying to get reception I was finally rewarded with an SMS promising to send me an SMS.

... there have actually been a couple of helicopters buzzing around all day - I'm assuming it's VVIP guests arriving for Carnaval <g>
