Buying a Personal Computer in Delhi Has anyone purchased a Windows desktop personal computer in Delhi? If so, how do prices compare to the US and where did you buy it? My quick net search tells me that bringing one into the India triggers an 80% tax! This would be used primarily for email, web access, and schoolwork by my wife's young cousins. We're exploring the Dell India website but would prefer to pick one up from a reputable dealer in Delhi since it is a surprise gift (sshhhh...please don't tell). Thanks for any info. Iqbal

Iqbal, Bringing a desktop into India is a real pain. You would alsmost certainly get hassled at the customs. You can get a custom built desktop anywhere from 700USD to a professional one at 1000 USD. On the other hand, customs wouldn't bother you much if you carrying a laptop.

I took a Compac portable into India when I was teaching at the monastery in Karnataka. Customs didn't even look at me when I arrived (Mumbai) with it over my shoulder. It might be easier to buy a laptop in the US, a second hand one should be cheap and its a lot easier to carry. For what you want to do, the most basic machine would be more than adequate.
