Buying a GPS in India

Hi
Here's a different question for you...
Has anyone any idea if I can get hold of a GPS in India, and if the prices compare to , say, the UK (£130 for a cheap one)?
I'm thinking of having a go at bagging a few points on the Degree Confluence Project , as there seem to be loads left in India.
Does anyone fancy coming along for the ride?!
Vinay - there must be a few around Delhi you could bag!

Cheerio!

GPS

GPS has been talked about with good humour on this thread, but not about it's price in India.

I hear ya!
Hey, I find it hard to put my gadgets away!
But like the man said - maybe it'll help me find myself!

Hey, if you're around this winter, Vistet, I'll be out there hunting around in places no tourists ever went! All for the glory of a couple of photos on a website. Sad 'innit?

Nice one Vinay. If possible, please get back to me in a day or so with the local prices, as I fly out shortly. Over here in the UK the price is about 10,000rp for a bottom of the range Garmin eTrek GPS. I'm considering trying to do an entire lateral, say, the 15degree lateral.

Sadly , I`ll have spend this winter saving holiday & money for my next trip. Current daydream : Karachi - Gilgit- Kashgar-Ngari/Ali- Lhasa_..(which offers opportunities for this hobby as well : there are three points logged for the whole of Tibet)

Cool reading while doing a full lateral could be The Great Arc : read about the struggles involved in hauling a half-ton theodolite on top of a temple to fix a position, then haul out the GPS out of the pocket and do the same.
With luck maybe you could find one of the towers that were built for the surveys lateral branch.

(prices are about the same here in Sweden - Rs 8900 for the basic Garmin Geko)

Indy
Buy one in the UK. There are a lot of fake Garmins on the market in India. I tested a few in Delhi and Mumbai and many of them did not work properly. Also prices are a lot higher than the West.
