Which is fine a) if you can afford all that gadgetry, b) you have big enough batteries to support it and don't mind the engine-running time it takes to keep them charged and c) while it is all working!!!!

Have you thought about using a (monocular) 'Spotting Scope'? I know many of them can have a digital compact camera attached to the eyepiece. I believe this is becoming a popular workaround for people who like to go 'birding'.

As Mrs. Mukherjee is involved, I shall stay away. Do what you have to.

If I just had to buy something fast, I'd check what's available in Pune; then do some internet research to decide just one other city with best prospects (Mumbai, B'lore, Hyd, however far you can go); go check the best few shops there; close my eyes, say a prayer, and buy something!

One good way to reasearch is to call major manufacturers/importers and ask where their big dealers are in India.

Good luck again. Let's know of your progress. Specially if you find some particularly good shops, that may help others.

Talking of which, if you are buying for use in India, try to get weather-proof, or gas-filled or whatever Merchant (Help again please?) can tell us is the appropriate thing for keeping humidity out of them.
Easiest way to keep away humidity is to put small bags of silica gel with cameras, binoculars etc.Silica gel is very cheap and should be changed frequently say for two months or less. A costly option is to put the things in a glass decicator. Of course this is the best way to get rid of humidity.

Mrs. Mukherjee has recently shifted her sight to a great looking Computer table [ignoring the fact that we have a laptop, not a desktop]. I wish she stuck to Binocular only, much better for my pocket.

Anyways, I'm taking my time; as I took 4 months researching my camera and half-an-year for the laptop. That's quite a delay, but I get more satisfactory products. Besides, gadget price falls considerably even in few months .

Get to see very few people using Binocular in India, it's not yet a popular travel accessory here. Still, the tips I'm getting in IM making it easier. Many thanks to Nick-H, akt, EOS and other contributors.

[OT: After the Binocular, my next gadget would be a smartphone, only I've to get clearance from my conscience and Mrs Mukherjee. And I've decided already, it won't be an iMate Jasjar, but an O2 Atom.]

It is one of the last things people think of bringing, but I very much recommend bringing binoculars!

Whether for seeing birds, or the detail of some temple tower, a compact pair of binocular is a really useful thing to have in your bag.

Don't worry, she'd soon notice all the desktops available in the market! Do you guys already have a home theater system centered around a giant lcd/plasma tv?

This may not be a bad time to cultivate ecological interests, bird-watching, feeding the squirrels, gardening, etc, and start avoiding the malls.

Couldn't be more correct! However, Mrs Mukherjee is not far behind in those. That doesn't stop her from going to malls.

To confess, I feel a slight lack of moral strength to confront. If she says, "Ok we don't need a computer table. Do YOU need a smartphone now"?

Would it really hurt to admit that you merely want the smartphone and don't need it?

4, Work as a telescope
5. Plays mp3 music
6. Plays DVDs and CDs of all formats including Bluray and HDDVD
7. Record the pictures, video and audio on CD / DVD / tape / Film / CF /SD Cards AND in-built 1 TB Hard-disk
8. Work as a quad-band phone working on both GSM and CDMA

Ok...that was meant to be a joke ...but a scary one.

Because most convergence products tend to be "Jack of all trades......."

My experience says you can, but you won't feel really great. The camera viewfinder is too small an opening, that too for one eye. Binocular is just designed to magnify usual view, camera can't ever offer that comfort.
