Lightbulb Best TV, Internet, Mobile providers

My family is moving to Mumbai very soon. Since we started canceling our TV/Internet/Phone services here in Europe, I've been wondering... which providers are recommended in India? Mumbai in particular? Any suggestions?

Their Mobile service, DTH TV and Internet are good....But the landline service is not satisfactory....I would say MTNL still rules in that sphere.....

If their internet (ADSL) is working, the landline will be too, surely?

My current vote goes to Airtel too, and if you are going to take their broadband, it would be pointless to pay for a separate land-line phone.

TV, I really don't know. We use the local cable, and nobody in Chennai seems to be happy with local cable ever!. We turn on the TV for a few minutes every so often, so it is not my thing.

We also have the local cable operator - the only advantage is he is cheap for hooking up a few TV's on the one line. However, whenever there is a power cut I can't get TV despite having an invertor. Also when the cable station has a power cut no one gets it then either! Some of the SkyTV's have far more channels, especially movies in English - however more expensive annually and you can only hook one TV to it. Now that recently we got BBCWorld finally restored to cable TV, I've decided against switching to SkyTV - was all for it up to a week ago. I'm satisfied with NDTV news in English, Star Movies, HBO, Star World and BBCWorld. History channel, Nat Geo., Discovery, and AXN is also available in English but I never watch them. When you get settled check around re your options is what I suggest.

Aircel NO...
I have never had any problem with my Aircel mobile service, whereas Airtel have been telling my wife for two years that, within three months, they will put up a new tower so that she can get a decent signal on hers. We're not exactly in the middle of no-where!

Between us we have:

BSNL Landline
BSNL ADSL Broadband, now not used, to be canceled
AIRTEL Landline
AIRTEL ADSL Broadband
AIRTEL mobile, post-paid
AIRCEL mobile, pre-paid
SCV cable TV.

Not a bad collection, eh?

Nick-H, you're in Tamil Nadu, right? And very well connected by the looks of things. The problem I found with Aircel was trying to buy pre-paid credit away from the eastern part of India, say in central or northern inland areas in northern Karnataka, Maharastra and Madhya Pradesh.

Yes.

I think that Aircel is more limited; I don't recall seeing the name in Kerala, which is, of course, just next door to us. They use other networks to facilitate roaming, but I don't know how "re-charging" (with money, not electricity) would work, which is a very important factor.

For me, I can just call a friendly dealer here and request credit to be put on the number, paying when I see them.

I never chose Aircel, really, just went to said dealer back in 2005 and took what was going at the time!

you can hook up more than one tv (through an extra digicomp unit) to one sat dish and pay a fraction of the price of the original connection. we pay about RS. 460 a month for a tatasky connection and two sub connections at RS 125 each for the same set of channels.. halves the cost. every DTH operator offers the same deal. In chennai this is the best option cause of CAS.

Oh and i vote for airtel as well.

Personally i hate aircel. My first mobile connection was an aircel prepaid... my Rs 1600 balance disappeared when i converted it to postpaid and they actually sent me a lawyer notice after a couple of years to cough up the 800 bucks i left outstanding on the postpaid connection...
