Airtel changed
Hello to roamers
Above I complained about Airtel work and was going to switch back to Hutch. When I arrived to Delhi i realized it was not easy - retailer who sold me sim card was not able to revive my Hutch number, and I was told to visit one of their main service centres, because it was Hutch mistake. I was too lazy to go, and overall it was not my mistake why sim card stopped to work though validity was up to Feb 2006. All people said maybe I did not submit my documents but that was the first thing I did on purchase and my retailer was also surprised. So I was left with Airtel card and surprise - they removed obstacles which impeded me from making outgoing calls to my country. Now I crisscrossed almost all country and can say with Airtel you can make calls just about everywhere. |

BSNL or Tata or RIM
Don't forget, for foreigners it is not easy to get this connection. Most of them sell only mobiles with particular connection not SIM cards. BSNL yes have SIM cards but where they are? Always absent, my friend in Bihar spending third year and could not manage to get it, they just out of stock. And BSNL is state run company not so interested in attracting new clients, being content with its monopoly in certain areas like Sikkim and Ladakh. Service according to my friends in these areas is awful. So, there is choice only between Hutch and Airtel.

I brought a mobile with me, but will not buy another SIM card in India, especially not Airtel. You're relying on the guys who sell you the card to send the registration forms to Airtel so they don't deactivate the account. Why should they bother if you're a tourist and will likely be thousands of kilometres away when you finally get cut off? Calling customer services is not possible because *all* calls to and from your number are blocked. When charging your credit, the guys who sell you the credit say that they can't tell you how much credit you'll get if you're roaming - I paid Rs. 320 for Rs. 195 of credit in Kannur.
In short, I've just written off a Rs. 100 SIM card and about Rs. 300 worth of credit because some lazy arsehole who owns a mobile phone goldmine in Mangalore can't be bothered to do his job. The mobile phone industry in India is crammed with get-rich-quick shysters, cheats and incompetents. My mobile will be offline until Thailand.

To the OP, I have found BSNL works very well in Uttaranchal.
In fact, BSNL is good for many smaller places, which the private companies don't find lucrative enough to cover. Quote:
I agree that after sales service is bad at times. No excuse, but they have taken on too many subscribers for obvious reasons.

You seem to be an Indian...rather than asking us the plans, log on to the sites of operators in your area and check the plan...choose the one that is most suitable to your needs and budget..
