Batteries for digital cameras
In a thread about what to pack, it was stated that carry-on batteries not in devices are confiscated on airplanes. I have a coolpix requiring lithium batteries with a recharger.or 2CR5 batteries. I guess a second rechargeable wouldn't be too wise. Are 2CR5's easily obtainable and cheap?

You could put the batteries in check in. I can't say authoritatively but I saw a host of batteries at a better camera joint in India. Does the word digital implie a first rank shop? I finally had 8 batteries confiscated. They left the other 20 (India). I was astonished to find them waiting for me at security in the next county's airport. I can dig it even if I don't understand bureaucracy..

I had problems flying into Mumbai on Cathay Pacific. They refused to let me carry Nikon batteries or Sony batteries for my handycam. They checked it in but I never did get it when I got to Mumbai. They have promised to replace it when I get to HKG next. I picked up some batteries in India which are generic no brand stuff made in Malaysia. They do work but my devices used to overheat.
I ended up having a friend DHL some batteries over from HKG. Bill

Old Hippie, how's Cathay Pacific? I've been flying Singapore air for ages, but Cathay has a better timing to Delhi. Recommend them?

Their service is great. The flight/connection schedule is excellent . The only problem is that it is quite difficult to get seats on their Indian routes. The problem could be because they only fly A320s into Delhi and B777s into Mumbai. The Cx HK - Bom/Del flights are often referred to as the "Happy Flights" by the CX crew as the passengers are mostly Indians going back home and seem happy. If you fly Cx to Mumbai you can get a free Mumbai - Dubai - Mumbai segment added on if you ask them for it. Bill |

What do y'all reccomend doing for batteries? Buying them before I go, buying them there or going a rechargable option?
I figure they'll probably be cheaper in India but apparently of a lesser quality, rechargable is probably cheaper again but I don't know how reliable electricity sources will be.. I will take a film camera as a back up anyway, but any ideas/experiences would be great. Kat |

Bit of both. I took rechargables and didn't have any problems ( I had tons and NIMHs are great). However, I took a backup of regulars just in case..

![]() Supposed to batteries that are in the device are okay. Loose batteries are not and should be checked in. Unfortunately there is no 'set' rule and it's just surprise 'we are gonna take'em away' or 'okay you can go'. Batteries aren't really on the big list of 'things you cannot carry on' Showing that there is no set standard, in Delhi my cigarette lighter was confiscated, the person in front of me same kind of lighter was allowed to go through. batteries in hand luggage
I have learnt the lesson to check in camera batteries on the flight out of Srinagar - but luckily I got away with it this time
They wanted me to take battery out and check it in and I told them that if I do it I would lose it forever and they will never get any tourist to come to Kashmir if I can't get my camera out of there... then I smiled sweetly... and was given "all clear" and a separate security label for my camera really there seem to be no rule but for my next flight I will hide my camera battery in the check in bag but this time thanks to "all clear" I managed to take some pics of Himalayas!! |

batteries for digital cameras
After posting the question I went to India and decided that I would just try to take batteries with me on carry-on luggage. I and my two children flew India Air from Delhi to Aurangab by way of Mumbai to Cennai by way of Mumbai and back to Delhi. That's five flights with more than one check per flight for a total of at least 25 checks with no one objecting to the various batteries we carried and we never checked are bags. I had at least 6 AA and several rechargeable CR5's. Leaving Auragabad they seemed to check everyone's luggage at least three times. Before the arriving plane landed, a large family marched across the field on the way home from work. I guess the airport people were just bored because that was the big flight of the day.
They also allowed us to bring film without having to have it x-rayed. At Moscow some drunken official insisted on having it x-rayed. In general airport people seem pretty good about regular film. We took a total of 9 flights and if the film had had to be x-rayed 9 times, then it would have been worthless. I don't know what the above means except that if you travel with children (teenagers) you might be less likely to be hassled. Security at the Taj was also exceptional. During the Christmas rush there were absolutely no problems with reservations but we really lucked out with the fog. India Air people were perfectly reasonable contrary to various warnings posted.
