Apple Macbook pro

Hi I am considering the Apple macbook pro. Can any users here give me their feedback, particularly those that have shifted from windows to apples. I hear that you require a "bootcamp" software to run windows. How easy or difficult is it to switch between the two. And any hassles with the MAcbook??

I have one. Purchased in April.
No problems with the machine. It is hot but the temp is not that bad. I can use it on my lap as long as I am wearing trousers (that is not meant to be as weird as it sounds).

OS X is easy. My parents who have no background with computers picked it up quickly and face it. Microsoft has been "copying" the mac OS for so long you probably are familiar with many of the features.

Bootcamp is required atm but the feature is expected to be included in the next OS release. Boot camp is distributed free by Apple.

HI Grantaustralia

It's always nice to see a reply from an acutal user. Thanks a bunch. Couple more Q's. how is the track pad on the Apple? And can one connect it to a TV and play DVD's?

There is an Apple-themed store in the Atria mall near Worli. They should have Macbooks for you to try and may also be able to answer your questions.

I haven't used Macbooks myself but do have some experience with Macs with mixed reactions overall. Some of the interface is awkward especially for Windows users but there is plenty of neat stuff as well: especially the iLife multimedia suite.

Hi Lady,

In June this year I became the proud owner of a MacBook Pro (2Ghz, 1Gb Ram, 100Mb HDD) after many years of using Windows.

I had never even used an Apple before I bought the MacBook Pro but had become so fed up with MS Windows that I did a bit of product research and then took the plunge!

In a nutshell, I am SO pleased with my MacBook Pro!! I will never own a Windows based computer again!

It took me about a month to adjust to the new OS sufficiently enough to be able to use the laptop effectively, it is not difficult to adjust to or learn how to use the Apple OS, it is just different.

It now feels weird when I use the PC's in work.

Yes, the new Intel based Mac's are capable of running Windows too, and by all accounts then can run Windows very quickly and it works well. Switching between the two OS's requires a re-boot however, when you re-boot 'Bootcamp' kicks in and allows the user to choose between the two operating systems.

I personally would never bother installing Windows on my MacBook Pro, I chose the Apple to get away from Windows, so my opinion is that unless you have some bespoke software that you MUST use, and it only runs on Windows, then why bother?

Plus, if you are going to install Windows on an Intel Mac, I believe it must be a pucker registered version of XP, service pack two, or it will not run.

There are some issues with the MacBook Pro (see link below); overheating, noisy fans and such like, but a lot of these are getting resolved with each Apple Tiger OS update. I have been a lucky bunny, I bought my laptop whilst on holiday in the USA, I bought a 'refreshed' one (discounted, ex-display) and saved myself a huge wedge of cash, and I have had only one slight problem with it (a display/screen issue). Apple offer a global guarentee so the Apple UK support guys sorted the problem out without any grumbles (installed a brand new logic-board), and it has been spot on ever since!!!!

Here is a link to a forum that may help you make up your mind before purchasing one...

http://discussions.apple.com/categor...categoryID=190

You will find a balance of viewpoints on the forum, lots of grumbles, lots of praise, lots of advice, decide for yourself.

I am very happy with my MacBook Pro, it works!

Hope this helps.

Regards

Hey Blakey

thanks for that detailed info. And you said it-I will have to make that decision. Regarding applications, so without the windows can you run acrobat reader on the Apple?

Periscope, thanks for that info. Certainly better to "handle it" before buyiing it.
Didn't know where their resellers are. i ahd called the toll free nos and they said they would get back to me, but still haven't.

Hi Lady,

Yes, there is a Mac version of Adobe Acrobat...

http://www.adobe.com/support/downloa...r m=Macintosh

There are lots of freeware/shareware programs for Mac's and most of the major players e.g. Dreamweaver, Photoshop etc have Mac versions of their programs. Even Microsoft Office 2004!!!!

http://www.microsoft.com/mac/

There are also lots of websites like this one...

http://www.macworld.com/

They offer a lot of Mac info/advice, just Google for them.

Hope this helps.

Regards

Yes it can do all those things. The trackpad is great. The two finger scroll is very handy. I keep trying to do it on my laptop at work that is a windows machine. The two finger scroll is very intuitive.

Acrobat will run. In fact in the print option you can save any file type (wor processing/image/spreadsheet) as a pdf. This is very handy when wanting to share files.

Its possible to run 'non registered'(ahhm) version of XP sp2 on Mac using bootcamp. However like Blakey said, if you are gonna get a Mac as well go the whole hog and stick to OS X, rather than shifting back and forth and diluting the whole experience of working on a Mac.The Windows could be used only for its comfort value as a standby ,just in case.
It would take a few weeks for sure to get adjusted to the new OS when shifting from Windows, but all the people I know who have taken the trouble to do so,have become Mac converts.
Most of the popular softwares are coming out with Mac versions and with the increasing popularity and market share of Macs that trend is only gonna increase.

track pad is great but the button sucks. even i am fond of two finger scroll. but track pad is a small thing and there are lot bigger things in favor of macbook pro.

mine has never crashed... never.

run many times faster than windows. its a zero crap OS

no virus. hang on... since there are no virus there are no ugly virus protection softeare. on windows each and every file has to pass thru anti-virus which takes its on time and consumes its fare share of processing power. so no virus means better speed for same specification. plus money saved on anti virus programs.

image and audio quality is un matched. i have a windows(at work) machine and a mac. my images look much better on mac.

and yes all the productivity softwares are there. don't worry.

but only paintshop pro is missing

BTW there in no point in buying apple products in india. they spend a lot on showrooms and sell referbs at full price in india. in india they are selling core duo models and in other places ( eu , states etc) they are selling core 2 duo machines with double ram at same price.

Can't tell you about switching from Windows to OSX, what I can say is that the MacBook Pro is a GREAT computer. I've been on Mac's for ten+ years and this is the best lap top of any Mac I've had.
I had mine in Varanasi for six months this year (in a Rs 100/night room) and had no problems. As someone mentioned above, they do get hot, and those thin-cotton pants of a Varanasi summer were not thick enough for strict 'laptop' use. I got the 17 inch screen . . . videos/photos shine on it.

If I remember rightly, OSX is Unix-based?

Yes, a proper operating system that was multi-user, multi-tasking and stable before Windows was even born.

But no viruses?

If that's true, it can only be a matter of time, surely....
