I have a prepaid Airtel account, based in Tamil Nadu, but i am traveling all of India for the next 6 months, and i have no plan to return to Tamil Nadu, i am on the road, roaming every day. The problem I have is with the roaming rates, i don't like them. I am recharging 100-200rupees/per week with roaming rates too expensive for me, even though I just send/recieve local/national SMS, and the occasional local/nationa voice call. I don't want to get a new number everytime I change states, is there anything else I can do? Thank you.

messages on roaming are bound to be expensive... with any operator.

are you connected when on the move? could use this..

http://site3.way2sms.com/content/index.html

after registering/authenticating it will send messages with your number as the sender. no roaming charges. only browsing.
meh...

Thanks, i am using free SMS as well online, but sometimes people don't respond to free SMS, i don't know why, i guess they get confused because sometimes there are two numbers in the SMS.

Airtel has some Special Tarrif Vouchers which decreases the cost of roaming calls...you can contact the Customer Care Service number for more details......

Mine is also pre-paid connection...

There is a special tariff voucher which charges only 60p per minute for incoming calls...

But in my opinion BSNL is best...they charge incoming calls at 1p/sec. and outgoing is also at the same rate.
