Airtel: Phone in HP, Ladakh/JK, Goa (,Kerala?) - to USA

realize these questions or similar ones have been asked many times here so i will keep it brief...

i have elderly parents i call every ten days. thinking of bringing my mobile to india. so much easier to call given time difference.

i have or can find people to buy me the sim if need be

forum seems to find that airtel is good in hp and overall good for roaming.

will the mobile be the same price more/less as calling from a box? i think i paid as little as rp7 in delhi to usa.

if purchased in hp, will i pay roaming on INTL calls from ladakh, jk/leh, goa...?

Yes, you will pay roaming in ladakh, Goa and JK if you buy in HP.

Overall, a MTNL/BSNL connection works in more places in the hills. However, if you are visiting just the bigger towns, Airtel/Tata/Idea will do.

Do give a few days wherever you buy the SIM card for any provider to 'settle down'. There are sporadic cases where they disconnect after a few days claiming that the papers (given at the time of buying the SIM card to the shop where it was purchased) have not reached them. Somebody has to chase this, in that case. If you have the option, buy the SIM from a company outlet.

Costs from mobile are the same as calling from any landline. BSNL/MTNL is usually the cheapest, though it sometimes suffers from lower signal strength in some larger cities.
