no i am using xp ;-)
for a usb dongle u'd also need an usb port lol. I'd recommend using the cable. If you have internal bluetooth u could check that out for sure too. I think the usb data-cable is the most energy saving thing. Internal Bluetooth probably more energy saving then external. But dont think sooo complicated. |

Airtel Data Card for mobile internet
Hello all,
Sorry to short circuit the thread below but situations evolve: [Moderator's note: This post has been merged with the original Airtel Data Card thread.] The Airtel USB data stick works fine on Mac or PC, no complicated set up, just plug it in. The Stick costs 3000rps. to buy and the monthly charge for unlimited is 670rps per month.(payable each month in airtel stands across India. As I write, transmission is averaging 4Kbps. Enough for mail and surfing, but forget serious downloads. Some areas, with 'Edge' towers will give you slightly higher but don't count on it. You still need photo; passport; indian address (hotel); but with a little persuasion, you're out of the shop and on the net in an hours time. Probably best to negociate this in a regional office, ie.city, but it can be done in small towns, they just have to have it sent from said office. Any questions? Stay light, b. I am currently using my Delhi sim card to access the net via bluetooth. I have found that internet in Gujarat, West Bengal and now Sikkim have all been free although I have been charged at the stated rate of 30p per 50kb in Delhi and Uttarkhand. Not bad! Connection here in Sikkim has been the best, download rate of 5-8kb so fine for travel planning and email. My friend's Rajasthan sim with monthly mobile office scheme (Rs.395) has not worked well at all, often only gives access to Indian websites.

Usb data card
Will I be able to get this in Varanasi? I am using a USB 3G data stick here in South Africa. I would like to know if there are any such connection in Varanasi as I need to keep in touch with my daughter (who is studying there) via Skype.

Purchase Tata Indicom Photon+. The device costs 3500. It is easily available at Tata Indicom Exclusive outlet...it is by far the fastest data card that i have experienced...You can ask your relatives to purchase the device and get it activated before you arrive.

I have Broadband+ and the speed is so pathetic. Expect for couple of times, I never got the speed of more than 50kpbs. (For couple of times I did get speed upto 650kpbs..but most of the time, its within 50kpbs). Sometimes it doesn't work at all for an hour or so and then starts working again but at a speed of 10 - 20 kpbs. I have complained so many times and they normally respond to my complaints after about two weeks asking the standard questions like what OS I use, what laptop make...blah.blah....and once I respond to this...they again get back after two weeks asking which area I live and then finally they transfer the ticket to network department who says that there might be some issues in my area and they are rectifying it....I am planning to stop using there services totally....its so annoying...more over, there prices are too high. |
