Airtel advertising texts...

Please, anyone, how do I stop receiving them?

Every day I receive four to five texts - 'Hindi Ringtones', 'Win a Honda Civic', 'Devotional Tunes', blah, blah, blah.

The final straw came when they started phoning me with recorded messages advertising something or other.

Its driving me insane! I've phoned them and visited the local airtel office to ask them to stop to no avail.

Any ideas on how to block advertising?

I used to get them while in India, but not as bad. A father's friend lent me one of his phones for the trip, and I got like a message per week, that's about it. I only switched on the phone when I needed to call someone though, which was often.

Thanks Gautam.

If you can find it there will be a page on their website where you can register not to receive all this crap they otherwise think it their responsibility to keep their customers informed about. Assuming that it is Airtel... you can't stop the spam from other companies.

If you can find that page it should work. It did for me and Aircel.

One who sells mobile phones (gsm's) Or in this case, maybe Gautam means the manufacturer.

a-cha, I had this problem with bloody hutch. At one point something went horribly wrong and i received constant non stop texts until my credit ran out. When I complained at hutch in delhi they said text DND (do not disturb) to some number. i walked away kind of satisfied but when i eventually tried it it didn't work!!

There is a Do Not Disturb page on Airtel's website somewhere which you can find with a Google search if you want to try it, but I signed up and still get just as many txt ads and calls - so basically, like all things Airtel, it's worthless.

If you really want to do something, I'd try calling and making your case for why you shouldn't get ads - and that you'll be cancelling your service if you continue receiving them. Still though, Airtel's customer service is also worthless.

Tell them that you don't understand Hindi and don't want their spam and that you will switch networks.

I received an unsolicited text this week from Kerala Police informing me of their upcoming Open Day. Sheesh. No, won't be complaining. You may want to have a look at: http://www.donotdisturb.in/ which provides links to (in theory) opt out of this rubbish. (I am not talking about the Police, of course).
