happy that's a presumption u're making there. AFAIK there's no monopoly least of all in himachal pradesh. If u go to the bharti/airtel authorized retailer then for sure you should get a good deal. There are plenty of plans to choose from so choose wisely. There are also special schemes/discounts around the festivals time so as to encourage mobile usage so if u'r travelling co-incides with any of the festivals then u can get a better deal than other times. Hope u enjoy the time in dharamshala

I think you'll find that Airtel won't work with a Mac.

A friend of mine tried to get an Airtel phone and data cable like mine for her Mac last November and she was told that it only works on a proper computer

Laptop Backpack For Travellers

Carrying the typical laptop case can be a serious pain in the behind.

I guess the laptop backpacks are really cool for lugging the laptop along with your other stuff without any frustration.

Samsonite and Targus was way too expensive by Indian standards and are not worth so much.

Maybe you should consider something like Laplace - MultiUtility Laptop Backpack by Cramster. Laplace is Ideal for business travellers. It comes with a dedicated Cushioned Laptop Compartment, Main compartment and an organiser compartment with external bottle holders Perfect for city use and travel.

They have also gone one step ahead and started using YKK zippers and Mesh Padded Shoulder Straps for failsafe ergonomics.

I have seen many people in bangalore esp bikers using this.

I think this is the link

cheerio..

I might be paranoid, but after putting my laptop in a sleeve I throw it into a small dry bag and then into my backpack. Someone told me that you could use Skipe with Macs.

I intend taking a Macbook, and have an unlocked mobile, can you explain to an idiot how I can connect both together so I can use either Aircel or BSNL prepaid sims.
Thanks

Airtel will very soon be showing a greater significance as Vodafone is increasing its profile in India, essentially Airtel is Vodafone India.

Aitel gives the best coverage in Himachal Pradesh ~ Reliance or as it is sometimes called here 'unreliance' is limited. Hutch don't do the hills.

The Airtel post paid Sim card is purported to be the largest capacity in India, what ever that means.

The Airtel data card is in theory not Mac supported but I was told by Airtel that it may be possible to make it so and to discuss it with the Airtel support. Bluetooth or USB via the phone works fine but may not be so good on Skype. The latest Beta version for Macs 1.5.0.61 is excellent with video facility but iChat is still the best.

I use a 12" PB and use the STM Glove which I find excellent.

There certainly are other possibilities. The advantage of the one shown is that it is light, compact, easily transportable, ready-made, all-in-one-piece, and rolls into a convenient size. If you can compromise on any of the above, you will find cheaper options on the net, or from solar suppliers in India, I guess.

Tim in England, temporarily laid up...
