mine was a large laptop that was a pain to carry around, but i didn't do much moving about with it so it was fine. but when i did i put it in a sleeve, and then sometimes in another bag.

There have been various posts on IM recently about security whilst on trains and buses - this post makes me question how sensible it is to keep your laptop in a separate, stand-alone laptop-bag, as some people seem to do. These are easily recognised, and tell the potential thief that here is an easily grabbable bag worth many thousands of rupees. Is that wise, making such temptation so obvious? Not in my book ! Tim in Ireland PS - my laptop hard drive has just left the planet, taking all its data with it, so here is a timely reminder to people, when travelling, to make use of online backup facilities for their important data - save it on a website, or email it to friends back home, or burn it on CD, or do all of the above.

I took mine in a shoulder bag too - but I also wrapped it in plastic "bubble wrap" which helped a lot.

And do you leave your laptop in the hotel?
How about security in the hotels (let's say budget Hotels of 15/20 Dollars per night); do you keep them in your rooms during the day or take them with you? Would it be enough to lock them into your suitcase? (I don't think so - that's why I'm still hesitating to take the laptop with me at all).

I have a Compaq Tablet PC - it is very small and rugged, so I just chuck it in my bag.
Most laptops have a special security lock fixing. If you have one on your computer you can buy a security device and chain it to an immovable object.

I usually leave the laptop in the room when I am out, and am always relieved when I find it where I left it. This is usually only in four star hotels, however. In hotels where I feel security might be questionable, I just take it in the backpack.
