What's with the non-resident price?

Hi all!

I'm just aout to book a flight from Chennai to Goa return in late september and need some help.

There are two different prices for residents and non-residents on the Paramount airline site. As a budget travellor, the national button is looking rather enticing as there is about 100$ (AUS) difference.

Is it only that one charges in rupees and one in US$? Does anyone know if there will be a hassle at the airport if i decide to say I'm a Indian resident (I live O/S) so i can pay in rupees?

Sorry if i come across as a penny pincher, but the difference is quite noticable!

Cheers for the help!!!

If you can produce an Indian passport or OCI, you are eligible for the resident price. At the airport, you might be asked to show proof of even for a domestic flight if you look like a foreigner/non-resident Indian.

According to advice given on another thread on here, it's never checked.

I can't say that for sure, but certainly my partner, who is white but who was an Indian resident and travelled widely for business, and who took many many more internal flights than me, was never once asked about it.

If you book through some travel sites, including makemytrip I think, you're taken to the airline's website at a point after the selection of resident / non resident anyway so you don't get a choice.

The airlines' websites generally don't explain clearly about the difference, I've seen it described in terms of which currency you pay in rather than whether or not you're an Indian resident.

Are you sure an OCI puts you in parity with a resident ? Need a affirmation of this statement. I thought, wrongly so, that OCI gives rights similar to an NRI.. which airlines, Tourist Boards may not comply sans a directive about outsiders with an OCI.

No I'm not sure any more though I was when I applied for the OCI card
I've had mixed experiences in this regard. When the OCI was first put forth as an option, it was in the govt website narrative (not checked lately, so it's possible there isn't official affirmation if that's what you're looking for) that OCI would be charged the same rates as Indian citizens; course enforcing it is a different issue. Some places I say it w/ authority that as OCI I am entitled to the same status as an Indian citizen, and they very contritely charge me the resident fare. Other times the person has pretended to not even know what OCI is.
