Uneven Airport Taxes

Guys,

I was checking the fares , what I noticed that now-a-days Kingfisher,Jet they are making base fares as 0 and taxes to what ever they want
some where taxes are 4329 base fare 0

Can they do like that . AFAIK taxes are fixed ?

Absolutly not, they cannot show on papers that the taxes "Delhi-Bang = 1200 in one and other is 1500"
You can take them to Consumer forum for wrong information provided.

Airport taxes do differ at various airports, e.g. a development fee is charged at the newly built Bangalore and Hyderabad airports. Sometimes they charge something called 'congestion fee' as well. The taxes on Aircraft Turbine Fuel are not uniform across different states.

I have never understand how Indian Air fares are regulated. I mean Base Fare of Rs 0, Rs 1, Rs 9.. These are all like jokes. Airlines even advertise online by showing their base fare for example Delhi to Mumbai in Rs 9.

Currently Indian airline industry is facing huge losses and few months ago it was news that they have formed some sort of Cartel and prices are decided jointly by every company. Don't know how much true is this news. I think Aviation Minister should impose some strict rules in setting prices.

As they say in brooklin taxes-scmaxes i lose on retail make it up in volume

So I took, a real working actual itn: which as been booked already; And analysed the BOM-HYD-BOM piece of it for just the one airline 9W a.k.a JetAirways.

From the US GDS system 9W published the following:

Quote:
Provide this information to a travel agent to help them match the fares found.
Make sure to provide the exact booking and fare codes shown.
Fare 1: Carrier 9W W2A30JK BOM to HYD (rules)
Passenger type ADT, one-way fare, booking code W
Covers BOM-HYD (coach) $0.00

Fare 2: Carrier 9W W2A30JK HYD to BOM (rules)
Passenger type ADT, one-way fare, booking code W
Covers HYD-BOM (coach) $0.00

9W YQ surcharge (YQ) $88.00
9W YR surcharge (YR) $10.00

Indian Passenger Service Fee (WO) $11.40
Indian User Development Fee (IN) $9.70

Subtotal per passenger $119.10
Number of passengers x1

Total airfare & taxes $119.10

* Changes to this ticket will incur a penalty fee.

Fare construction (can be useful to travel agents)
BOM 9W HYD 0W2A30JK 9W BOM 0W2A30JK INR 0 END XT 9.70IN 11.40WO 88.00YQ 10.00YR

Then I checked makemytrip.co.in for same flight numbers for 9W.

Quote:
Review Fare Details
Requested Availability
Passengers Base Fare Fees and Surcharges Total (F & S)
Adult1 Rs. 0(1X0) Rs. 5813 Rs. 5813

Total: Rs. 5813

Grand Total Rs. 5,813

And then finally I checked the jetairways own site:

Quote:
Fare Details
Base Fare
1 Adult @ INR 0 : INR 0
Total Surcharges and Fees
Fuel Surcharge (YQ) : INR 4700
Passenger Service Fee (WO) : INR 458
Other Fees (IN)* : INR 475

JetProtect Travel Insurance : INR 149

Total Trip Cost : INR 5782
(including surcharges and fees)
* Fees charged by private airport operators
Booking Classes : W, W
After analyzing these three (albeit on 07/17/09 after FOREX trading had stopped for the day & weekend) the cheapest fare for a gringo sitting outside India, buying online in US, was cheaper by 19cents on the first instance. Because, INR 5782 works out to USD119.29. O.K since when did you get this exchange rate ?retail exchange rate is much higher; hence - buying from Jet Airway's site or makemytrip.co.in would it more expensive. Noted that makemytrip as well as well as 9W pre-included domestic insurance by default. Something they cannot do and have to absorb when in the YQ and YR charges for gringos.

Now do focus on the US GDS system. It clearly indicates that USD 98 goes to Jet, and only USD21.10 are the taxes that Indian Govt. collects on behalf the Airport operators and other entities. Now More detailed analysis is outside the scope of this forum. Go to flyertalk or airliners.net for that kind of details.

Taxes can be different. For example, if Hyderabad airport
charges a user development fee (payable on departing flights per passenger) and Delhi airport does not, a round trip from Hyderabad will entail paying more taxes outbound and less inbound.

This has actually happened to me, in the days when there was no user development charge at Delhi but 300 rupees or thereabouts was charged at Hyderabad. All reflected under 'taxes' in the ticket.

Capt, What chits tries to say is different - he says for the same sector, different airlines charge different taxes - I have also observed it.

GoAir : 9:45PM Tax=0 Base fare =3300
KingFisher 8:45 PM flight Base fare =0 Tax=3989
IndiGo Tax is 2889/-

Whatever Chits has mentioned in Post #4 relates to a particular sector and particular date.

Those are not taxes: Remember, the airlines lump everything together and call it surcharge and taxes. Websites that you visit, have an obligation to break up the individual charges and present it to you in common sense way. Between BOM-HYD-BOM, all airlines will pay to Govt. USD21.10 which are the real tax. Rest go into the airline's khatta. They do not call it a fare, they call it surcharge/overcharge/supercharge...

The underlying GDS systems have that information - The website's that do not or cannot display because these are sloppily designed
