Sports Luggage Policy in Airline

Hi,
Somebody told me that their is policy in all domestic airline to carry sports items for free apart from 20 Kg Luggage items..

Is this true??
Is Trekking items comes under this category; its a big headache to move trekking equipments ..

Trekking items do not come under the Special Baggage category.

Golf Kit, Ski kit, Musical Instruments, Bicycle, Surfboard etc come under the Special Baggage category.
