Is your connecting flight at the domestic terminal? In that case you'll have to switch airports and go thru customs. Get seats as far forward as possible, saves time in the queue.
Ltst of hotels in Juhu, a few KM away.

The Leela Kempinski Hotel www.theleela.com is just around the corner.
They'll pick you up and drop you off at the airport again, but they're not the cheapest hotel in town! You may just want to slouch around in the airport, it's fairly quiet at night and unlike some airports in the Middle East, you can generally find a chair!

Have done this myself (10 hrs) the chairs are not too bad and if there isn't too many people around you can get you feet up on the facing row of chairs, still its a crap terminal and not comfortable, when you get through customs etc. There are large lounge beds and comfortable chairs. But as a rule they do not let you through until close to flight time.

International departure lounge has better chairs (almost like beds) to sleep. But you will not have access to this area. I don't recall seeing any place where you can catch a comforable sleep in the domestic terminal. I would go to a hotel from the International terminal. Last time I was there, couple of guys handed me near by hotel addresses. This is something to look at if you don't want to use the drop off/Pick up service to expensive hotels.

I've seen people sleeping there.
I myself tried the loungeroom on my way away, 500rs, and it was excellent - peaceful; blanket, food and drinks were included in the prize. I guess you could have even taken a shower there. I don't know if you can have the loungeroom when you come to India, do you know here in IM? Is there a loungeroom in the domestic airport?

I don't think there is anywhere to sleep in the arrival hall of the Mumbai airport. There is a large, cheapish hotel across from the Domestic airport. You can see the big "hotel" sign from the front entrance. Sorry, I don't know what it is called. There are some uncomfortable chairs in the departure lounge of the domestic terminal. Not really the best to sleep in.

There are long lounge chairs in the transit lounge of the International airport but these are only if you are transiting through the same terminal on an onward journey. If you are on your way from the domestic terminal then there is nothing much to talk about there as there are only normal seating arrangements in the departure area. If your flight is coming in at 4 am and you have to take a flight out from the domestic airport in the afternoon then there are a few hotels nearby the international airport that you can use to freshen up and get some rest inbetween. The distance from the hotel to either of the airports is not much so it's not a problem to get there in time. Hope this helps.
Cheers, Aadil.

Last year me, my wife & two kids spent quite a few hours in the Bombay airport, I couldnīt swear on it, but I really think it was the domestic. On the second floor there was some sort of resting rooms, which were quite expensive, something like Rs1000 or so, anyway, outside these rooms it was pretty quiet, so we just lay out a blanket and slept there for a couple of hours, this worked out well for us!
If you do consider leaving the airport though, I would walk to Shangri-la hotel, itīs about 1km away, and rooms are cheap (with Bombay measurments), about Rs500. You can find the phone number in Lonely Planet. All the best! /T |

Uncomfortable
I spent about 8 hours at Mumbai airport earler this year - domestic that is. There is a good staff canteen on the second floor (it's a pain to take your trolley there) where you can get chai and dodgy food very cheaply (and smoke cigarettes so long as no-one's looking. The chairs downstairs are out in the open and pretty uncomfortable so I got bitten to death by enormous mosies and because I was a white woman wearing hijab (muslim headscarf - which kept away some people) I was asked many questions by men pretending to be helpful. I did find some marginally more comfortable chairs in the arrivals lounge - I had to ask the soldiers to let me through - there was no-one else there and feeling a little safer I grabbed about 30 minutes sleep. Mostly, I went backwards and forwards to the canteen for something to do and read my book. Don't have the egg on toast - it was disgusting!!
I wouldn't recommend it necessarily but as a bloke you'll find there are certainly places to shut your eyes and places to drink tea....

I wonder if anyone has had a more recent experience overnighting in Mumbai's dosmetic terminal? I did so in '03, and recall the uncomfortable chairs, high-priced snacks, and brutal lighting. (Basically, I could get just inside, but not through the secure area until much closer to departure time.) Nevertheless, I think I can stomach it again this year.
I have a layover from ~12 midnight to early morning (onwards to Aurangabad). Does anyone have recent experience with a similar layover? Have conditions or amenities in the dosmetic terminal improved? Moreover, is this still plausible? Thanks, Grant |
