Plane Logic?
Just to share this as striking me weird with airline safety and all that jazz.
When I left IGIA to board my flight security stopped me to check the contents of my carry-on bag. Inside I had the usual, toothbrush, walkman, books, etc.... The one thing that caught securities attention was that I had a four pack of AA batteries with me, which I was bringing as extras for my walkman. Somehow I guess it's possible to make an explosive device or something with batteries so I had to give them up and have the crew of the airline hold them during my flight. Now the weird logic was that I could not carry on loose batteries onto the plane (they were still in the package) but the batteries that were already in my walkman were allowed. Struck me as odd that they were okay. So after the flight was over I was handed my batteries back from the staff and left the plane, walked over and caught my connecting flight carrying my illegal batteries on board with me and nobody cared. Strange logic for airport safety if I do say so....and the security at IGIA just gave me a hard time overall. Mike |

stranger has happened
I was once frisked (like everybody else) before an Aeroflot flight by the Delhi airport security and had to hand all batteries including the ones in the walkman, but after boarding the plane, the steward gave them back to me!

i just returned from india & an incident happened at the airport in delhi that reminded me of your situation.
a person i had just met in line had his carry on bag searched. they looked through his stuff & found some batteries and pocket knife (he forgot to check in w/ his other bag). the security guard decided to hold the batteries & returned the pocket knife to him. they said he can get the batteries back in bombay. in addition they left the batteries that were in his walkman.. he told me what had happened & couldnt believe it..... my bag had batteries & a walkman & they let me through after xraying my stuff with out hassle.... go figure.. my friend forgot to claim his batteries when we arrived in bombay, but at least he still has his pocket knife... |

It's even more fun when you're carrying assorted photo and video cameras, and a computer. But the grand champion among all of my gadgets for setting off alarm bells among airport security is my monopod, which is simply a telescoping rod but it looks like a gunbarrel or something on the X-ray. Another funny incident occurred when I forgot I had a harmonica in my pocket and it was picked up by the metal detector. The Sikh guard asked to see it, and didn't have a clue what it was. He asked his partner if it was dangerous, and I said only if I play it.

The batteries are considered evil because a stack of batteries inside a sock can be used as a weapon...of course, a bar of soap or a roll of coins would do that job as well.....
As usual, what is allowed ( or simply is not discovered ) is dependand on some poorly paid guard's whim or competance. Nowadays, I'll put everything in checked luggage, and only carry a clear plastic bag containing a waterbottle and a paperback book. Having no carry-ons gets you ignored by the security personel, who apparently have a quota of bags they must search during their shift. ![]() |

When I was in Khajuraho I bought one of those lotus flower candle holders (the ones that the petals unscrew out of). In a moment of feeling rich back home, I had booked a flight from Khajuraho to Varanasi. The security at Khajuraho airport was the strictest EVER and they thought my candle holder was a hand grenade!!!! If you know what I'm talking about then you will realise that they they weren't too far off in terms of shape etc. Anyway, leaving Khajuraho I got frisked twice and my bags were searched 3 times. Don't know if this is normal procedure because there was a VIP there who left in an army helicopter while I was waiting.
NB Jet Airlines is one of the best domestic airlines I've ever been on....great service and great food. |

<i once flew from karachi to istanbul, the guards were checking all the stuff in my backpack, mostly souveniers from India which i had visited before, they also found some 200 hundred photos I had developed in India,so I had to explain every single picture!!!
This strange procedure took about 1.30 hour. But they were really friendly,so it was more like showing pictures to your friends, after saying Pakistan is much nicer than India a thousand times, they wished me a warm good bye and asked me to write a book my travell experiences in Pakistan. I was glad that I didn t take any pcture from the Indian Army or so ![]() |
