More expensive to fly to Calicut, Chennai and Trivandrum

Why is it more expensive to fly to Calicut, Chennai and Trivandrum etc than to Bombay and New Delhi? Has it got anything to do with limited air traffic, taxes etc?

Its got to do with competition in the skies. The Delhi-Mumbai sector is the busiest in India, with business travelers and tourists keeping the airlines busy. Maximum number of airlines fly this route.
Delhi-Kerala route is expensive and therefore less popular. It is cheaper to fly to south east Asia than to Kerala from Delhi !

Where from?

If you are asking about from Europe, then maybe because it is quite a bit further!

If you choose any of the middle eastern carriers, Kerala can be quite a bargain.. Last time when I checked flying direct from some of them offered good price to kerala.. even better than the delhi/mumbai sectors.. But the prices can be varying and at times can go northwards often..

I meant generally from Europe. Perhaps there aren't too many airlines serving Kerala and the east coast of India?

Why is that? I know a travel agent said it's usually more expensive to travel to Bombay and New Delhi because these airports are busier with higher taxes...

Fewer flights from airports in Kerala due to Government restrictions. The tickets are therefore more expensive.

If you fly from Europe try Qatar Airways. They fly to many places in the South via Doha and they have good rates. Not dirt cheap though.

I love IM .. I was thinking the same today! Emirates from sydney to Trivandrum is almost $3200 AUD (3 stop) Gulf is not much cheaper (3000 and 3 stops) .. I could go via Qantas or Thai for $1800 but that would mean 3 flights and long stop overs. I think it will be cheaper for me to fly into Mumbai and then get a cheap domestic flight down to Trivandrum.

I think it's simply because these are the major international airports. Many others have only started handling international flights over the past decade or so, and they do serve fewer flights. Anyway I think in most countries flying into the major airports will be cheapest, save for some charter deals. Probably more economical for the companies involved.
