Luggage Limit

Hi everyone,

Correct me if I am wrong, but from what I read on here, seems like the weight limit on checked bags for domestic flights is 7 Kgs (roughly 15+ pounds).. I am planning to land in Delhi and leave for Leh the next day, fly back to Delhi and to Calcutta from there and then to Bombay from Calcutta.. Long story short, is the weight limit that strict even for ppl who r coming from abroad as well? What do international travelers do in India.. go on a trip abroad with a 7 kg bag? Last time when I went to India, I flew to Calcutta after landing in Bombay, Jet allowed me to carry my over weight luggage after seeing that I landed in Bombay a couple of day ago from outside India and later I flew around leaving my heavier bag at a friend's place in Calcutta.. but this time that is not the case as I will be flying around and not be able to put my luggage somewhere. Any thoughts?

Initially I thought I would leave some of it at Delhi airport (if that is possible) but that wouldn't help me much as I would have to fly to Calcutta from Delhi anyway..

Any suggestions or experience shared would be appreciated..

You're wrong.

The limit varies by airline, but typically the 7kg weight limit you are quoting is for carryon. Checked bags have a limit that's more like 20 kg. I know Kingfisher's allowance is 25kg.

Jammu, Srinigar and Leh flights have a no carryon policy for security reasons.

Check with the specific websites of the airlines you have chosen. The limits vary. Some even allow the extra baggage to be carried for free as cabin baggage.

JetLite Economy class is 25kg for checked baggage, plus 7kg for carryon. Varies by airline, but they're all going to be around the 20kg mark.

Well, yes ... that's about what my bag weighed for my last (90-day) visit to India.

Wonderwoman - You must be a very efficient packer! I'd love to know the essentials you have 'gotten it down to' from your many experiences traveling in India ~ (I know this info. is scattered in many forums, what to take and what not to take, but if you are one woman who can live for 90 days in India on 7kg of stuff, it must be all the right stuff!) ~

I have travelled to India with only carryon, it's not hard. It was for far less than 90 days, but all the essentials were there. If I'd stayed longer all I'd have had to buy was maybe a few more clothes and ongoing replacements for small items like shampoo sachets.

Being an avid reader, I could probably not live quite as comfortably as I'd like on 7kg for three months, but I could live quite happily with about only 2-3kg of imported stuff. (netbook, camera, phone charger etc.) - remember you can buy anything else you find you really need in India.
