Liquids in Carry On Luggage

I'm flying to India for a week long business trip in a few weeks time. I'll be flying into Mumbai with Virgin and then going to Bangalore, Delhi, Ahmenabad and back to Mumbai.

Ideally I'd like to get by with just a carry on bag. I've got stuff that matches the UK regulations. However, I just noticed that the Indian rules are quite a bit stricter.

For instance on a Virgin flight leaving the UK to Mumbai you're allowed up to 100ml in each container if its in a 20x20cm clear plastic bag. See here for more detail.

However, for the return journey (BOM-LHR on Virgin) these are the rules
Quote:
No liquids, foods or cosmetics of any type are permitted other than the following items:
* Prescription medicine with a name that matches the passenger's ticket and supported by an authorised person
* Baby formula, breast milk, and baby food in small containers if a baby or small child is travelling

No liquids includes gels, pastes, lotions, liquid/solid mixtures and the contents of pressurised containers, e.g. toothpaste, hair gel, drinks, soups, syrups, perfume, deodorant, shaving foam, aerosols, etc.
The Jet Airways terms and conditions say:
Quote:
Medicines and toiletries in limited quantities which are necessary or appropriate for the passenger during the journey, such as hair sprays, perfumes and medicines containing alcohol may be carried. Many of these listed articles can be carried as air cargo provided they are packed in accordance with cargo regulations.
Kingfisher's terms and conditions say:
Quote:
Restricted Articles - Medicines and toiletries in limited quantities, which are necessary or appropriate for the Passenger during the journey, such as hairsprays, perfumes and medicines containing alcohol, may be carried. Many of these listed articles can be carried as air cargo provided they are packed in accordance with cargo regulations.
Does that mean that 20-30ml containers of Deet, shaving gel, deodorant & toothpaste would be allowed in a carry on bag?

The enforcement of these rules are arbitary and it depends on the security personnel's moood at that time. I did not take and chances and put all my toileteries with my checked in baggage.

One other thing to remember is that in India batteries are not allowed in hand baggage. (It is unclear if batteries installed in a item are allowed or not)

I noticed that. I hope it means they ignore batteries in laptops and mobile phones. Would a couple of AA batteries in a digital camera allowed? I don't need half a dozen D cells.

If you fly BA from London: they are very strict at heathrow.

In Delhi they allowed us through security with two liters of water en 4 packages of applejuice, without even noticing.

So far for airline security.....

We returned from BOM on 12/01/07, the day they implemented the no liquids ban. Four days earlier there had been some "threat" of a hijacking by Indian homegrown terrorists.

Machine gun toting soldiers at the terminal gate denied entry to those passengers hand carrying H2O bottles, ect. Signs warned that no liquids, with the exception of medicines and formula, would be allowed.

That said, the security x-ray personnel failed to detect the bottle of waterless hand cleaner in my wife's carry-on bag and the bottle of cough syrup in mine.

If in doubt take a small suitcase and check it in.

A friend of mine just came from the UK and said liquids were not allowed to be carried onto the plane (he referred to a bottle of water). He didn't say anything about the other items mentioned above.

Just back from 4 weeks in India. No problems with water bottle in Calicut, Mumbai (both domestic) and Delhi (international). Detected and let through in Zurich, detected and not allowed in Munich.
