Just another Transfer Thread (Delhi)
I have booked rooms at the Velvet Apple (south delhi) for two days.
There Airport pickup is 1500Rs. from what i have read on here that seems really steep. Is it? What should I expect to pay if I do a prepaid Cab from the Kiosk at the airport? From the Airport to the hotel it is 22km if that helps. Is it ok to not prearrange your transfer from the airport to your hotel? |

Hi - that is a lot. Delhi Cabs are a pretty good taxi service and charge 15Rs per kilometre.
As you come into the arrival area there is usually a Police Pre Paid Taxi Kiosk - this is your best bet for a hassle free ride as they will set the price at a very reasonable rate. Only catch is we are talking about Delhi Black Cabs here - no AC. Easy Cabs will also do the same, but will charge about (at least) a third more than the police cab. |

1500 is probably more than three times what a normal airconditioned taxi will cost you.
Airport parking (in 2008) was 60 rupees, for reference.

Definitely far too much. Even if you don't have a pre-arranged pick up from the airport it is easy for you to get a taxi - Easy Cabs have a booth there and also Delhi Tourism Corporation - I have taken one from these people several times, late at night. They charge a little extra but nothing like what you have been quoted! And they are safe and reliable. You can book the taxi inside the airport itself before you go outside, and generally immediately you will be taken by them to your car.
There are also police pre-paid taxis, which are cheap, but the vehicles are not well looked after, and whilst things are supposed to be 'tightened up' the security of the drivers is sometimes dubious.

For this trip anything beyond Rs. 330 (Rs. 15 x 22 Kms) is plain waste of money. You can prebook at www.megacabs.com or www.merucabs.com .

easy cabs has a base and counters and all at the airport. They charge you 15rs/km + 80 bucks (parking) which is a fair amount. Pre booking with any other cab requires a delhi phone number - the guy will come and pick you up from the main road which isnt too convenient for foreigners on their first visit here!

Thanks for the great information. I found this to be the same problem when contacting Grand Imperial Agra. They wanted well over 2x the normal rate. 4000Rs. for pickup from the Agra train late afternoon station, tour to agra fort and other sites drop back of at hotel for hte night and in the morning heading to the Taj Mahal and then to Fatephur Sikri and onto Bharatpur drop of at my next nights hotel. It was 135km total including return trip....
Just cause I am a foreigner doesn't mean i am stupid and don't research. I have $$ cause I am cheap and bargain hunt.. It is so fusterating.... I will just arrange travel when I arrive at each destination. I had thought about prebooking stuff but have given up.. |
